Dr. Wilson Mayhew, Entomologist Dr. Mayhew is at his core, a slightly older, real-world, time-shifted version of Wilson from Sarge's Vodacce campaign. He still comes from a lower-class background, but has bettered himself through education--I don't really know how class worked in England in the 1920's, but assuming there's a rise in the new middle-class, Wilson's square in the middle of that trend. He enlisted in the army in the Great War, but was rejected due to a heart murmur that has since turned out to be benign. He worked with grain insects, and worked closely with the army in where large quantities of grain were stored during the war, and his investigative techniques were instrumental in discovering a weevil infestation that could have wiped out the entire store if not caught in time, as happened in . Since the war, he received his PhD for his study of the migratory patterns of , the study of which took him around the world. I'm not entirely sure what his personality is yet; I know he gets animated when talking about bugs, and isn't entirely comfortable around women. In fact, I'm considering a connection along those lines--though he has dated a few women here and there so far, his extensive travel has kept him too distant for the women he was attracted to, and none lasted very long. He's settled more at this point, with a teaching position at , and (if she's not otherwise engaged) has started to court NPC #5, Miss Hypatia Mallory. Perhaps he knew her father from somewhere? You tell me whether it would make more sense to know him through academia or through the military; either would work. As far as connections to the rest of the group; I'll hold off until I know who's going to be in it. I'm free on the 5th, but I'm *not* free on the 12th (that's Ellric's Birthday party day ;-) For solving mysteries, I envision him being able to observe the local insects for clues (and I expect to make up facts here, assuming that's OK--say, if we suspect the murdered man might have been poisoned with X before being hit on the head, I'll hypothesize, "Aha! Ants are usually attracted to blood, but are repelled by X. If we examine the blood stains, if there are no ant trails around them, that will mean our hypothesis is true!". Another tack might be to relate human activity to analogues in the insect world (like Miss Marple : people in her village). Skills! Superb: Study of insect behavior Great: Well-travelled Good: Military (non-combat) connections Fair: Earthy roots Mediocre: Wooing Women Poor: Forming long-term attachments Terrible: Aim (why not?)
