[S7S] Sargent says, "FAIL"

Alixandre has connected.
[S7S] * Bobby has joined the channel.
[S7S] inky says, "gosh"
[S7S] Bobby asks (of GM), "Are you Parry today or am I?"
GM says (to Bobby), "Hey, do you have your revised character? I don't think I have it."
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Recap 10."
Eolo has connected.
Bobby says, "Oh, the GM isn't on #S7S."
Bobby says, "(HINT HINT.)"

[S7S] GM says (to Bobby), "I think I'm safe with CaptainMorgan being parry."
[7thsea] Federic rolls 3k6: 10+1 4 9 | 24
Geoffrey says, "hmm"
[S7S] GM says, "While we're waiting for katre, should we go over the rules? This is as much for me as anyone else."
Geoffrey has left.
GM asks, "3k6?"
Geoffrey has arrived.
Geoffrey drops dice bag.
[7thsea] Geoffrey rolls 2d6+3 dice: 10 4
Gunther arrives, looking for booty.
[S7S] Federic says, "sure, why not"
Geoffrey has left.
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Your swash forte (e.g. the Koldon-like thingy) gets two free techniques (e.g. gifts)?"
Gunther asks, "Oh, there's plundering?"
pile of 10-sided dice disappears.
Federic rolls 3 6-sided dice: 1 6 1| 8
Geoffrey has arrived.
[S7S] Bobby says, "(Or was it three?)"
Geoffrey rolls 2 6-sided dice: 6 6 | 12 + 2 = 14
[S7S] GM says, "It gets MOD gifts."
Leik rolls 3 6-sided dice: 4 6 1| 11
Geoffrey rolls 2 6-sided dice: 5 5 | 10 + 2 = 12
Leik rolls 3 6-sided dice: 3 3 1 | 7 + 100 = 107
Leik says, "Now *that* is a roll"
Leik says, "Also known as the Final Fantasy Boss Monster roll"
[S7S] GM says, "So, 2 at good; 4 at um the next level."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "it *was* three, but now it's 2"
[S7S] GM asks, "Great?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I think it's good, expert, master"
[S7S] GM says, "That sounds right."
[S7S] GM looks it up, and you're right.
[S7S] GM says, "Then there's 'Challenges', 'Extended Challenges' and 'Duels'."
[S7S] GM says, "A Challenge is a single pass/fail roll vs a TN."
Federic places his feet (and more importantly, his boots) on the table
[S7S] Leik says, "Right, time for our already-obsolete game"
Geoffrey says, "perhaps sir would care for this footrest instead"
[S7S] GM says, "An Extended Challenge is a bunch of challenges until one side is zeroed out or gives up."
[S7S] GM says, "And Duels divide up attack vs. defense, and also end when one side zeroes out."
Federic has said "Good man, Geoffrey" and moved his feet before he has had time to consider the relative merits of tables and footrests
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "or you can concede earlier, of course"
[S7S] Leik says (to GM), "oh, I figured out why I might have been hired by Garrick (when you have a moment)"
[S7S] GM says, "There's nothing explicit about ganging up on people, I think, so I suppose we don't know if a villain gets all his dice vs. everyone, or has to divide them up amongst you all."
[S7S] Leik says, "I know which I'd vote for"
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "Sure; what's your thought."
[S7S] Federic says, "ganging up is for NPCs, surely"
[S7S] Federic says, "true heroes always fight at long odds"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, there are rules for NPC mooks ganging up, at least."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "there is a section somewhere about heroes ganging up on villains and arch-villains"
[S7S] Leik says, "since we've tweaked my background so I'm from a micro-island and spent a fair amount of time wingcloakin' it, I might have been hired initially as a wingman"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(I don't remember what it says, though)"
[S7S] Leik says, "a position which I insist does not involve accompanying Garrick to bars"
[S7S] GM says, "I think it says, "You may need to gang up on them""
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "Hee"
[S7S] GM says, "Sounds good to me."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to GM), "yeah, sure enough"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hmm, a rule on the previous page says you can only engage two foes at once"
[S7S] Leik says, "though I would be scheming for Master of Arms or Master of Guns the whole time"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "which implies to me that you can only have two heroes on a single villain, even though that doesn't quite make sense"
[S7S] Federic asks, "the Bruce Lee Rule?"
[S7S] Leik says (to Geoffrey), "it might be a 'this is not the Matrix 2' rule -- you must have enough space to swing your musket or whatever"
[S7S] GM asks (of Geoffrey), "Which page is this?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "oh, and that actually says that the defense roll stands against all opponents, but separate attacks must be made against each"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "225"
[S7S] Bobby exclaims, "I need a third thing for the Shadow Mage penumbra!"
[S7S] GM says, "Oho."
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "stealth? illusions? darkness?"
[S7S] GM says, "Which of course means that they'll use Riposte with all their dice."
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "night-time?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Federic says (to Leik), "egads, keep your hands off my job,"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "also, yeah, that reminds me, there are special maneuvers on page 228 -- are we playing with those as options?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(some of them are mentioned elsewhere, but there's also stuff like feint and disarm and, yeah, riposte that I don't think appear anywhere else in the rules)"
[S7S] Leik says (to Federic), "mua ha ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "Well, the Parry-Riposte rule is pretty obviously broken, so maybe not that one."
[S7S] Federic says, "honestly, you'd deprive our boarding manouvres of any class at all"
[S7S] Bobby says (to Geoffrey), "If I take Stealth, then I would need to replace my Deception forte..."
[S7S] Leik says, "I'm certain our success would overcome any lack of style"
[S7S] GM says, "If people want to try the others, though, that sounds fine by me."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "okey doke"
[S7S] Leik asks, "so we're nixing parry-riposte as is?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Also, darkness/illusions sound more like technqies than a forte's penumbra."
[S7S] Leik says (to Bobby), "hrm"
[S7S] Leik asks, "what do you have so far?"
[S7S] GM asks, "Oh, these are the things to replace 'kolduncraft', etc?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Reverse engineering and underworld connections."
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Right, I replaced alchemy/kolduncraft with reverse engineering and koldun ties with underworld connections."
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "street running?"
[S7S] GM says, "Sounds good to me."
[S7S] Bobby says, "And am looking for something to replace arcane/supernatural lore."
[S7S] Leik asks, "if you want to be literal, could you have a time/light sense? Like, you always know where the sun is and where shadows will be and when a building will shade this particular bench?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I guess I could just leave that one, but it sounds like book learnin' to me."
[S7S] GM says, "You could just keep arcane/supernatural lore."
[S7S] GM says, "Heh, timing."
[S7S] GM says, "And have it be more intuitive."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Alrght."
[S7S] GM says, "Arcane/supernatural intuition."
[S7S] Federic says (to Leik), "you, sir, are an unwashed savage, insensible to the simplest of aesthetic considerations. Further, you have girly hair."
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "That sounds cool, though perhaps as a Technique/gift."
[S7S] Leik says, "This hair is the envy of all who are knowledgeable in the ways of the world, and complements my luxurious moustache perfectly."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hee hee"
[S7S] Leik says, "Foible: Takes forever to get ready*"
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "Hee"
[S7S] GM says, "I guess the deal with timing the extended challenges is that I give the opposition X ranks in something and then you have to get past them all."
[S7S] GM asks, "Do I tell you beforehand?"
[S7S] Federic says, "doubtless the Skies live in constant terror of your toilet arrangements"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I think the number of ranks they have sets the TN"
[S7S] GM asks, "In non-what-they're-using Fortes?"
[S7S] Leik says, "With sabre and brush I conquer the seven skies"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "well, in this example on 218 their success climbing the wall is just reducing the wall's difficulty"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "but in the previous example against an NPC it's reducing their other fortes"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is the difficulty the only forte the wall has?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "so I guess, yeah, if you want the challenge to be longer but not necessarily harder you can give the thing other fortes"
[S7S] GM says, "So yeah, a wall might only have one Forte, but an NPC might have a few."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "apparently"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(I guess in theory the thing could use those other fortes when making certain attacks)"
[S7S] Bobby says, "'Good [+2] Hard to Climb, Average [+0] Supports Vines'"
[S7S] GM says, "Weird, I was thinking that exact sub-forte."
[S7S] Bobby says, "'Poor [-2] Painted A Garish Color'"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee"
[S7S] (from Bobby) GM says, "But that was for the villain"
[S7S] GM says, "OK, bobby up at http://spod-central.org/~lpsmith/rpg/transcripts/s7s/urchin2.txt"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "interesting"
[S7S] GM asks, "Found Objects/Scenery is an unchained technique?"
[S7S] Federic reminds himself about Style Points
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Yeah."
[S7S] GM says, "Oh, right--you all start with 5 style points, and I'll try to give you more as time goes on."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Oh yeah, style points."
[S7S] GM says, "If you think someone deserves a style point, type 'yay [person]' and I'll be notifiec."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Hmm. That's not working."
[S7S] GM asks, "Oh, hmm, where did it go?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "what are the rules? spend a style point before the roll for +2, or 4 after the roll for +2, or spend 1 to recover a rank of damage, or spend 1/4/8 to declare facts, or spend 1 to create NPCs and +1 to give them ranks"
[S7S] GM says, "Oh, right, declaring facts."
[S7S] Federic says, "or get temporary stuff"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Miskatonic Reading Room, apparently."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "it's weird that for 1 point you can create a minor fact, or create a whole NPC"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Was the 7th Sea die-rolling interfering with stuff?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "yes"
[S7S] Federic says, "well, that NPC is basically useless unless you spend more points giving them ranks in stuff"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Aha."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Federic), "that's true"
[S7S] GM says, "Well, an NPC on the same level as a minor fact."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yeah, I guess"
Geoffrey has left.
Geoffrey has arrived.
[S7S] Geoffrey asks (of Bobby), "you want to just move it into the room here?"
[S7S] * Garrick has joined the channel.
Garrick arrives, looking for booty.
GM exclaims, "Yay!"
[S7S] Garrick says, "sorry. very very sorry"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "also, Feat of X! techniques let you declare facts for cheaper"
[S7S] Federic says, "to create an NPC of more use than a meat-shield you probably need 3 points"
Federic says, "avast, cap"
Federic says, "'n"
[S7S] GM says, "No problem; we're still cementing the rules in our heads."
[system] * Scheduled database dump beginning now (Sat Feb 2 12:33:54 2008).
[system] * Scheduled database dump completed (Sat Feb 2 12:34:09 2008).
[S7S] Garrick says, "oh good, I never re-read the combat rules"
[S7S] Garrick says, "I'm, um, I'm playtesting the ignorant friend everyone has who never reads the combat rules"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hee hee"
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha ha"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(when we start I would appreciate a recap of how everyone knows everyone)"
[S7S] GM says, "@recap #s7s 1000"
Bobby drops drama die dispenser.
GM says (to Bobby), "Yay, saw that."
GM says, "And that."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
GM says, "Did we hook up parry to that? That would be a reason to use him."
Bobby says, "We did not."
[S7S] Garrick says, "I figure there's a shadowy world-wide group of people who are Ex-Whatevers, and we all know each other from there"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha it being named ddddddddd"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Garrick), "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "OK, let's not worry about it, then."
[S7S] Federic says, "Leik and I have both sailed under Garrick before, Geoffrey is my valet, and Bobby stowed away on us once and latched onto us"
[S7S] Federic says, "is my understanding"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "oh, ok, that's easy"
[S7S] GM asks, "And Garrik doesn't have his own ship right now, does he?"
[S7S] Garrick says, "I sadly do not"
[S7S] Federic says, "this given it'd be good if I could remember that ship's name so we can refer to escapades on it"
[S7S] Garrick says, "Cursed money-grabbing Barathi"
[S7S] Garrick asks (of Federic), "Why, how can you forget the old Sparrow?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I know Garrick because I once stowed away on his ship a couple years ago when he was on a smuggling run."
[S7S] Bobby says, "I do not know Federic or Geoffrey at all, nor do I know what happened to Federic's horse, because I wasn't even there, and I don't even think that urchin looked anything like me, but I wouldn't know because I didn't see him because I wasn't even there."
[S7S] GM asks, "OK, so: my idea was that you're sailing with a patron/sponsor/person-who-gets-in-the-way who has insisted on being First Mate, and what can you do since they own the ship?"
[S7S] Garrick says (to Bobby), "And I'd have had you over the side, too, except that the last cabin boy had just succumbed toa bad case of fisherman's mouth"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "what can we do except wait til we're wait out to sky and then keelhaul the heck out of 'em"
[S7S] Federic says, "That horse was a purebred destrier! Geoffrey, when we next pass through the Jungle Sky remind me to order you to cut me a switch."
[S7S] GM says, "So tell me what kind of ship you want--they're on page 133 and following."
[S7S] Bobby says, "I have no idea how I know Leik."
[S7S] Leik says, "'here, have you ever tried a wingcloak before? *shove*'"
[S7S] Garrick says, "I previously had a skyjunk"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "we want a skyjunk, yeah, I think"
[S7S] Garrick says, "because those look to be the best for sneaking in and out of port"
[S7S] Garrick says, "it sort of depends on what the sponsor wants us to do"
[S7S] Leik says, "I don't want to know about your skyjunk"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hee hee"
[S7S] GM says, "Sounds good."
[S7S] Federic says, "if he's hired us, chances are he's not up to very much good"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "if they have a skyjunk they are probably transporting smaller cargo"
[S7S] GM asks (of Garrick), "That can also depend on what you're interested in--smuggling? Regular trade? Risky trade? Some combination?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "since it appears to be specialized in landing on water at a cost of less cargo space"
[S7S] Garrick says, "I'm big on smuggling, with a good regular cargo as a cover"
[S7S] Leik asks, "though perhaps something at which you didn't get caught?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "practice makes perfect"
[S7S] Garrick asks (of Leik), "Hey, how was I supposed to know they had a koldun in the customs office?"
[S7S] Federic says, "that part is always optional"
[S7S] Federic says (to Garrick), "if you had just let me do the talking as agreed..."
[S7S] Garrick says (to Federic), "In the past I've been alarmed at how poorly you speak Bribe."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "or Subtlety"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "remember that time we tried to get some bluewood in Sha Ka Ruq?"
[S7S] Federic says, "but then, expecting an agreement to be binding from a Crailese, and a policeman at that... I should have known better."
[S7S] Garrick says, "(um, it's still called Sha Ka Ruq, right?)"
[S7S] GM says (to Garrick), "Yes."
[S7S] Garrick says, "whew"
[S7S] Federic says, "I was drunk then. That is a different matter entirely."
[S7S] Federic says, "Had the customs agent been a gentleman the matter would never have arisen."
[S7S] Garrick says (to GM), "Anyway, I shall be happy to meet this aquaintance of yours and discuss his business proposition."
[S7S] Garrick asks, "Does he have the cargo already, or does he require our assistance in obtaining it?"
[S7S] GM asks, "Do you have a preference?"
[S7S] Leik asks, "and would we be obtaining it or 'obtaining' it?"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee"
[S7S] Garrick exclaims, "Exactly!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Also, I misread 'Do you have a reference?'"
[S7S] Bobby says, "And thought perhaps we would need to write up a short CV."
[S7S] GM asks, "Actually, that sounds interesting--maybe obtaining something from one of the skies?"
[S7S] GM says (to Bobby), "Hee"
[S7S] Garrick exclaims, "Items Smuggled: Too numerous to count. Times Caught: Once. Time in Prison: Never!"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "like, swiping something off an island?"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "or stealing something from someone's ship?"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "or finding something rare out in a sky?"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "or like harvesting bluewood ourselves?"
[S7S] GM says, "All those sound possible."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Harvesting doesn't sound adventurey."
[S7S] Garrick says, "yeah"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "unless it was illegal harvesting"
[S7S] Bobby says, "And stealing from a ship sounds piratey."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "in violation of clear-cutting laws"
[S7S] GM says, "Oh, of course it's illegal harvesting ;-)"
[S7S] Bobby says, "So I would go with stealing stuff off of an island or tracking down something rare."
[S7S] Garrick says, "tracking down sounds good"
[S7S] Leik says, "as long as it is adventury I am okay with it"
[S7S] Garrick says, "maybe someone saw a rock somewhere with <useful thing X> and we have to re-find it"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Or maybe someone owned such but... misplaced it."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Perhaps during a recreational card game."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Or in a back alley while distracted by a small crowd of thugs."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I guess we can work out the details later on"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "presumably the deal is the guy has misplaced something and wishes us to recover it"
[S7S] Federic says, "all this fancy free-form RPG nonsense"
[S7S] Federic says, "it's just an excuse for back-seat GMing"
[S7S] Federic says, "or it *will* be, as soon as I have enough Style Points to introduce five arch-nemeses and a love interest"
GM says, "So, Sir Reginald, your patron, has hired you all to go recover some highly-potent medicine-dust he lost in the Sky of Stones. He has a map, but has been very cagey about letting you see it."
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Make it seven, and they're all midgets."
Garrick asks, "Hmm, the SKy of Stones, you say?"
Garrick says (to Leik), "Make sure we take some extra sail-menders. And some extra sailors."
Leik says, "Of course."
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "how large a crew do we have besides ourselves?"
Bobby asks, "'Highly-potent', huh?"
[S7S] GM asks, "Hmm, I dunno--a couple dozen?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "okey doke"
Bobby says, "Wonder what 'e's got that 'e needs that for."
Federic asks, "Sir Reginald? Why must we suffer an interminable series of insufferable aristocrats?"
Garrick says (to Federic), "Make sense, man! If they are insufferable, then clearly they cannot be causing your suffering."
Geoffrey says, "further, sir, I believe you are contractually obliged to suffer them as long as they are paying your salary"
Leik says, "It is quite like being in a military organization, only your orders hopefully come with money"
Garrick says, "Speaking of salary, that's an excellent topic."
Bobby asks, "So we get a ship, right?"
Federic says, "That will be quite enough, Geoffrey. Garrick, you are an illiterate son of a barnacle-turd."
Bobby asks, "Can we keep it?"
Geoffrey says, "I was a trifle surprised when you gave me to understand he had refused to pay half the fee in advance merely because he was providing the ship"
Garrick says (to Bobby), "Hmm, factoring in issues like wear-and-tear, mileage fees, mooring licenses, general depreciation, etc etc, I think that's more than fair."
Federic says (to Bobby), "snot-drenched striplings are forbidden by law from owning boats"
Bobby bites his thumb at Federic.
Federic attempts to clip Bobby around the ear, but the brat has dodged worse a thousand times over.
Garrick asks (of Reginald), "I assume you will at least let us see the map once we've left port?"
Federic paces the quarter-deck in an ornamental fashion, getting tavern-floor muck on the newly-scrubbed boards
Garrick says, "Otherwise, our navigators will have a tricky time of it."
Reginald exclaims (at Garrick), "I'll show you where we need to go, don't worry about that!"
Geoffrey follows behind Federic with a small broom
Leik mutters something about confusion flowing like wastewater from the top down.
Bobby asks, "How do we know it's not just a portrait of 'is Gramma?"
Garrick says, "Very well, then, once everything is stowed we shall be off."
Garrick says (to Reginald), "As the First Mate, you shall be in charge of weighing anchor and casting of."
Garrick says (to Toth), "(sotto voce) Don't let him do a thing."
Reginald says, "I can do that! Easy."
Geoffrey says (to Federic), "I have stowed your cases in your cabin below, sir"
Bobby explores the rigging, climbing and swinging monkey-like.
Federic pales on seeing Reginald's face, and hurriedly makes his way to the prow
Leik moves to the prow to watch their departure.
Federic asks (of Geoffrey), "(sotto voice) do you remember those features?"
Garrick moves about the crew, giving low-voiced orders and making sure that everyone knows to ignore Sir Reginald.
Reginald attempts to unloop the lines to the dock, and they start to get hopelessly tangled.
Geoffrey asks, "I don't believe so, sir -- is he an old acquaintance?"
(From Garrick) Toth also moves among the crew, but instead of speaking he simply shoves sailors in the right direction, or gives some a boot to the rear to get them moving.
Federic says, "I last saw them two years past, in an unfortunate connection with a formerly-innocent ward of his. Petronelle, Poppaea, some name of that sort. Oh, you remember these things better than I."
GM says, "At that moment, you hear running feet, and voices crying "Halt! Stop that ship!""
[S7S] Federic says, "(dictate a minor fact?)"
Garrick exclaims (at Toth), "Hurry it up!"
Garrick exclaims (at Reginald), "Let the men handle that!"
Bobby exclaims, "Time to fly!"
[S7S] GM asks, "For which?"
Garrick pulls out his dagger and slices the lines Reginald has tangled.
[S7S] Federic says, "my inconvenient affair with Reginald's ward"
Leik, hearing the commotion, moves around helping speed things up, pitching in where needed.
Geoffrey says, "ah, yes, I do recall you having some difficulty thinking of a rhyme for Penelope"
[S7S] Federic says, "and the consequent necessity of concealing my identity"
GM says (to Garrick), "A Basic Challenge! TN, hmm, we'll say 6."
(From Garrick) Toth and the sailors get the rest of the lines undone, and another group sets the sails.
Federic wraps his cravat around his lower face and rushes to defend the gangplank
[S7S] Leik asks, "can we pitch in?"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "okay, so if I'm using Good[+2] Skyship Captain, I roll 2d6+2?"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "or 1d6?"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "or what?"
[S7S] GM says, "2d6, I believe."
Garrick rolls 2 6-sided dice: 4 4 | 8 + 2 = 10
Geoffrey rushes to the side of Federic's last trunks remaining on deck, to keep it from dropping overboard as the ship tilts.
[S7S] GM says, "OK, it's player-narrated, so say what happened."
(From Garrick) Under Garrick's blade, the last rope parts and the junk begins to move away from the dock.
Federic exclaims, "No! That one has the love-letters! And my only clean pair of breeches!"
Leik says, "Ha ha! We have escaped from --"
[S7S] GM says, "(player-narrated success and failure both, for future reference)"
Leik turns to Sir Reginald, "Er, whom have we escaped from?"
police run down to the docks, shouting.
[S7S] Garrick asks, "where are we, anyway? Crail?"
[S7S] GM says, "Sounds good ;-)"
[S7S] Garrick says, "excellent, spending 1 Style Point for a minor fact, then"
Garrick exclaims, "Bobby Half-Penny, is that you? I do so love the look of your face as I sail away!"
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "That sounds interesting enough (#belated) that I'm going to give you enough style points for it to dictate the fact for free. Plus one, even."
Federic makes a sweeping bow to the policemen from the head of the gangplank
Geoffrey grabs the handle of the luggage right before it slips overboard, and drags it safely downstairs.
Police shout some more, then turn and pile onto another ship moored at the docks, yelling at the captain.
[S7S] Leik says, "er, which? Sorry, I got lost"
ctate arrives, looking for booty.
[S7S] Federic says, "yeah, me too"
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "Your dictated minor fact thing."
Garrick exclaims (at Reginald), "Why don't you, um, go below and gets the charts? You can figure out which way we should be sailing!"
ctate is just the cameraman, or something
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "wait, federic was the one suggesting a minor fact, unless you mean who we're sailing away from"
[S7S] Leik says, "I didn't realize I had"
Garrick exclaims, "Stay down there until we call, we need to be very careful about our course!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I thought it was Federic and Garrick who dictated minor facts."
Reginald exclaims, "No, I should be up here! We still need to luff the sails!"
Fang arrives, looking for booty.
Garrick says, "I've got it under control."
Leik says (to Reginald), "Sir Reginald, as the most valuable member of the crew and the man who knows where we are going, discretion may be the better part of escaping"
[S7S] GM says, "Whoops, sorry; right. Federic."
Garrick waves at Toth and the crew, who are already begining to set the sails.
[S7S] Federic says, "woohoo"
[S7S] GM says, "And I almost missed Garrick's! Sigh."
[S7S] Leik says, "this is what happens when you expect us to do the GMing"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee"
Leik looks back, judging distances and how long it might take another ship to catch up with them.
Bobby_Ha'penny's voice floats over the water, "Cast off! I don't care, sir, that ship must be stopped!"
Leik says (to Geoffrey), "If you have a moment and know where I stashed my wingcloak, it might come in handy very soon."
[S7S] GM says, "OK, Reginald is going to stay up on deck messing with stuff until someone convinces him with a Good (+9) roll that he should go belowdecks."
Federic dashes around the ship, making sure the crew all have cutlasses and pistol to hand
[S7S] Garrick says, "anyone have a better shot than me? I guess I can work in Crailese as well as Skyship Captain"
Geoffrey says (to Leik), "just one moment, sir -- I believe I saw a crewmember placing that on the after deck"
Bobby, hanging upside down by his knees, drops down face-to-face with Reginald.
Bobby exclaims, "Hi!"
[S7S] Leik says, "I can try the leadership thing at +2"
[S7S] Garrick says, "awesome"
Geoffrey says, "er, or was it aft? I am not quite 'up' on this nautical language"
GM says (to Leik), "It's a larger ship, rigged for sailing, not sky-sailing. It'll catch up with you in maybe 15 minutes if it gets up and running quickly."
Bobby grabs a loose rope end. "Do you know what this was supposed to be tied to?"
Bobby says, "Because I think it used to have a metal thingy with curved bits and a little bolt on one side attached to it."
Bobby says, "I dunno what it is, but you look like you know what you're doing, so you probably know all about that kind of thing."
Geoffrey locates Leik's folded wing and starts snapping together the spars.
Leik has disconnected.
Leik has connected.
[S7S] Leik asks, "sorry, I'm zaboinging. Anyone have a crack at Reginald yet, or shall I go?"
[S7S] Garrick says, "go for it"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "Bobby is talking to him but is looking more to assist, I think"
[S7S] Federic says, "so we're on the water, yes? skycloaks only work over the Blue, I thought"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(can we assist? I forget how this works)"
Bobby says (to Reginald), "I wonder if there's an extra one in the boxes in the hold."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
Bobby says (to Reginald), "I'm no sailor, so I wouldn't even know how to start looking."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "right, I'd assumed we were sailing into the sky, but I guess we must be on the water preparing to launch off"
Garrick starts getting the sailors organized while Reginald is distracted.
[S7S] GM asks, "Hrm, assisting. Are there rules for that?"
[S7S] GM flips through.
[S7S] GM says, "Nothing with the word 'assist' at least."
[S7S] ctate says (to Chad), "Nota Bene!"
Bobby says, "But I hope it's not important. It used to be looped through that big sail -- the one that's kinda flapping now."
Leik exclaims (at Reginald), "Sir Reginald, think of the crew! They will be distracted protecting you if you are abovedecks!"
[S7S] GM says, "(yay pdf search)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to GM), "bottom of 215"
Bobby says (to Reginald), "But we're probably not going to crash! I hope."
[S7S] GM says, "Aha!\"
Bobby asks, "Maybe if you hold onto this end of the rope, that'll keep it steady?"
[S7S] GM says, "Good catch."
Bobby holds it out to Reginald.
Bobby says, "At least, until somebody finds a new thingy to tie to up to."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "hee hee"
[S7S] GM asks, "So! Leik's Leadership and Bobby's... what?"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Hmm. Deception? Found Objects? Both?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I can also try Griffin to boost my charisma/aura/whatever."
[S7S] GM says, "Sure, Deception +2 with the Found Objects 1d6."
Bobby rolls 3 6-sided dice: 6 5 5 | 16 + 2 = 18
[S7S] GM says, "Got it! Narrate success."
Federic strikes a pose on the aft deck and treats the pursuers to a detailed opinion of their heritage, talents, the honour of their profession and their immediate prospects
(From Bobby) Reginald starts edging away, but Bobby chases after him with the rope. "No, wait," he shouts. "Where are you going! You gotta help me out here! What if I let go by accident!"
[S7S] GM says, "In the meantime: Normally, you'd cut across the current to Fulma Harbor, and there into the Fog where the bluewood buoyancy takes over the ship. But sometimes people head with the current, gaining speed, and try to lift off after braving Dead Man's Falls."
[S7S] Leik exclaims (at Bobby), "yay!"
(From Bobby) Reginald says, "I've got to--" He looks from side to side. "I've got to get belowdecks! I'll... go looking for that thing for you. Must hurry!" Then he ducks down into the hold and away from Bobby.
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "well, luckily there's plenty of time so we can take the long way"
Garrick exclaims (at Toth), "Take the wheel, we're heading for Dead Man's Falls!"
[S7S] Garrick says, "luckily my bosun is also an expert navigator"
[S7S] Federic asks, "what would Westley do?"
(From Garrick) Sailors scamper around the rigging raising and lowering sails to get the best wind.
Geoffrey says (to Reginald), "ah, sir, if you are retiring your cabin perhaps you could care for a cognac"
Federic's tongue involuntarily spasms at the thought of nautical-quality cognac
Reginald wipes the sweat from his brow. "Thank you, that'll do nicely."
GM exclaims, "Meanwhile, the ship turns and heads with the current, followed by Bobby Ha'Penny and his comandeered ship!"
[S7S] GM asks, "What's your ship's name? The old one was the Sparrow, right?"
Garrick sends a squad down to the Works to begin making ready.
[S7S] Garrick says, "yes"
[S7S] Federic says, "the Smoked Halibut"
Bobby sits on the aft rail and waves at Ha'Penny.
[S7S] GM says, "Hee"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
GM says (to Bobby), "As you watch, you see the following ship take a sharp turn leeward."
[S7S] Federic says, "named for both its odour and its tendency to catch on fire"
[S7S] ctate says, "bwaha"
Bobby exclaims, "Hey, the other ship is turning away!"
Leik walks up behind Bobby. "Oh?"
[S7S] Leik says, "skysailor roll to figure out what they hey they might be up to"
GM says (to Leik), "And, hey, look, there are all its cannons now pointing at you."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Bobby says, "(Which way's leeward? Away from the wind?)"
[S7S] Leik says, "or not, you know"
[S7S] Federic says, "(1 style point, ensuring the ship randomly catches fire at a later, dramatic juncture)"
Garrick says, "Yes, many captains are afraid of Dead Man's Falls. I don't know why."
[S7S] Bobby says (to Federic), "Hee."
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha"
Garrick says, "Tsk, tsk. Bobby never was gentlemanly."
Leik sprints forwards. "Prepare for cannon fire! Garrick! Toth!"
Bobby says (to Garrick), "Hey, I -- oh."
Garrick says (to Leik), "Really, there's not much we can do besides try and sail faster."
Garrick says, "You gentlemen man want to duck, however."
schep arrives, looking for booty.
Leik says, "We'll need a water brigade aft in case of fire shot."
Garrick exclaims, "BUT IF I SEE ANY COWARDS IN MY CREW I SWEAR TO VAOZ THAT I WILL KEEL-HAUL EVERY ONE OF YOU!"
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha ha"
[S7S] Leik exclaims (at Garrick), "ha ha yay!"
Garrick says (to Leik), "Well, of course."
GM throws Garrick a style point.
GM exclaims, "And, kaboom! Cannonballs, chain shot, and fire shot explodes towards your ship!"
Bobby exclaims, "Fireworks!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I'd like to try some magic."
[S7S] GM says, "Let's say that you can try to avoid vs. TN 13."
Leik eyes the arc. "The chain shot's at a bad angle, but the fire shot is likely to land."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Defelecting the shot with Pegasus."
[S7S] GM says (to Bobby), "Sure."
[S7S] GM asks, "And, hmm, one big everyone-assisting roll again?"
[S7S] Garrick says, "sure"
Bobby raises his hands like he's directing a piece of music. "Baa-da da-da-da DUN DA DA!"
[S7S] GM asks, "Or should I split up chain/cannon/fire?"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is an assisting roll the same as a normal roll?"
[S7S] GM says, "No, you add your bonus before the roll, looks like."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "no, you just add your mod to the other person's roll"
[S7S] Leik says, "aiding deflecting the fire shot with +2 dragon"
[S7S] GM says, "(actually, this probably answers the ganging-up-on-the-villain question from earlier, too)"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Also, did we conclude that using a Gift with Koldun counted as using a Technique (+1d6), or no?"
Garrick says (to Toth), "Good work with those evasive manouvers."
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, that makes sense to me. (getting the +1d6)"
[S7S] GM asks, "So we have Toth, Leik, and Bobby?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "OK. Then I'm contributing a 1d6+2 to whoever's doing the evasion roll."
[S7S] Garrick says, "I'm not sure if this is navigation in the Expert Navigator! sense or not, but Toth is skysailing his heart out"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Sure!"
[S7S] GM asks, "+1d6 from that?"
[S7S] Garrick says, "+1d6+2 from that"
[S7S] GM says, "Gotcha."
[S7S] GM exclaims (at Leik), "So, take the roll, with your bonuses!"
[S7S] GM says, "(and I was worried 13 might be too high ;-)"
[S7S] Leik exclaims, "so we're at 3d6+6!"
Leik rolls 3 6-sided dice: 6 3 1 | 10 + 6 = 16
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Yay! Everybody rp their bit in the helping!"
(From Garrick) Toth carefully gagues the approaching shot, and swerves the rudder port to avoid it, before setting the course back towards Dead Man's Falls.
Leik whips out his saber and arcs it forward. It judders as if it's hit something, and the fire shot slows behind the ship. Smoke wafts out of his clothes.
Bobby points at a cannoball and waves it up! Then sends a chainshot spinning off to aft! And a pile of grapeshot scatters in all directions!
(From Garrick) "Huzzah!" yells the crew!
Bobby exclaims, "Buh-ba-buh-ba ba-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa BUM BA BUM BAAAAA!"
GM says, "So! The ship behind you holds position, apparantly unwilling to brave the Falls today, but making sure you all don't change your mind and sail back."
[S7S] Bobby says, "(Note: Bobby is tone-deaf.)"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee"
[S7S] GM says, "Tone-deaf*"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Ha ha."
[S7S] Garrick says, "he'll get along great with Toth, who is Mute*"
Federic says, "pfah. When I was a lad we'd never have run from a bunch of two-bit policemen. Stand and fight, that's the ticket."
GM exclaims, "And here comes the falls!"
Garrick says (to Federic), "Now, now, we can always fight them when we return."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Do skyships have boats?"
Garrick begins barking orders at the crew: Raise the jib! Shorten the mains'l! And make sure that crew on the Works is Worksing!
[S7S] Garrick says, "yes, I think we do"
[S7S] Federic says, "probably Ships of the Line, but I dunno about stinky smuggler-junks"
Bobby exclaims (at Federic), "You could always take one of the boarding boats!"
[S7S] Garrick says, "we probably have one boat for going around harbors and stuff"
Bobby says (to Federic), "We'll wait for you on the other side of the Falls."
[S7S] Garrick says, "it probably doesn't fly"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Oh."
[S7S] GM says, "Let's do this as an Extended Challenge. They're Expert "Difficult to Navigage" and Good "Hazardous Rocks""
Federic asks (of Bobby), "*up* the Falls?"
[S7S] GM says, "Actually, I think there are skyboat lifeships and stuff on these sorts of things."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Fortunately, Bobby doesn't know much about sailing."
Garrick says (to Federic), "Up? No, no, we're going "over"."
[S7S] GM says, "Not that they *go* very far, but they at least float in the air."
Garrick exclaims, "And straight into the sky!"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "okay, what do we roll?"
Federic says, "Hold onto a rope, men. Children, don't trouble yourselves."
[S7S] Garrick says, "I figure this is mostly my Skyship Captain and anyone else's stuff they want to justify"
[S7S] Garrick says, "oh, and since I'm Good[+2] Crailese, I've done this before."
[S7S] GM says, "Roll whatever you want to use to challenge it, I think."
[S7S] Leik says, "I can help with skysailor"
[S7S] Garrick says, "cool"
[S7S] GM says (to Garrick), "Hee. Sure, why not."
[S7S] Leik says, "and lots of opinions"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I figure you've got this well in hand."
Garrick says, "Okay, men, I've done this before, and it's not that hard. First, we have to go around the rocks, and then it's just straight on."
[S7S] Federic says, "I can probably pull a rope with Pirate, but not help much more than any of the NPC crew"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "so, 2d6+6 for the first bit?"
Leik says, "It looks like there is a smooth path just inside the outer ring of rocks"
[S7S] Leik says, "I can contribute a +4"
[S7S] Leik says, "for the help"
[S7S] Garrick says, "okay, +8 then"
[S7S] Garrick says, "cool"
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha."
Garrick rolls 2 6-sided dice: 1 6 | 7 + 8 = 15
[S7S] Bobby says, "Really, what's the worst that could happen? We crash, capsize, and wash up on some inhospitable shore surrounded by hostile locals and the police."
[S7S] GM says, "It's an Expert task which is only +11, so looks like a 15 gives you 4 ranks of 'damage'."
[S7S] Garrick asks, "we take damage, or we did it damage?"
[S7S] GM says, "You did it damage."
[S7S] Leik says, "there's a big hole in the rocks now for others to follow us"
[S7S] Garrick says, "woo"
[S7S] GM says, "Or reduced its difficulty."
Garrick orders the crew and the ship slips between some of the Hazardous Rocks.
[S7S] Bobby says, "I am wondering if 'damage' is a confusing term to use for this."
[S7S] GM asks, "Hmm, is it one rank of difficulty per point? Or two?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "one"
Leik exclaims, "Just *inside* the rocks!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "And if there might be a more neutral word that would refernt o reducing the effectiveness of something/someone in a more general way."
Leik says, "...oh, or this path works as well."
[S7S] Garrick asks, "so how much difficulty is left?"
[S7S] Federic says, "one Good rank, I think"
Garrick exclaims, "This is where the current gets stronger! Toth, hold on to the rudder!"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "okay, anyone else want to roll this one or do I just roll the same thing again?"
[S7S] GM says, "So let's see. That means 3 points for the Rocks (good->average->poor->zero), and one point for the Navigation (good->average)"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "the navigation started as expert, I thought, so it's now Good?"
[S7S] GM says, "Whoops, right, expert->good."
[S7S] GM exclaims, "So, another navigation roll vs. 9!"
Garrick rolls 2 6-sided dice: 3 1 | 4 + 8 = 12
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yay for bonuses to the roll"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Exactly enough to zero it out!"
(From Garrick) Toth holds tight to the rudder, the crew crowds on more sail, and the Works do their not-clearly-specified thing, as the ship sails over the falls and into the clear air.
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee not-clearly-specified"
Reginald stumbles back on deck, heads to the side, and throws up.
Garrick says, "Whew, I'm glad that is behind us."
Garrick says, "That, as well."
Garrick says, "Ew."
Bobby asks (of Reginald), "Didja find it?"
Leik says, "The falls wash all away."
Reginald tosses Bobby a piece of rope.
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
Federic swaggers down to the main-deck. "Geoff, where the devil is my luxurious Sha Ka Ruqi deck-hammock?"
[Crows-Nest] schep says, "I'm picturing him literally holding onto the rudder rather than the wheel"
[Crows-Nest] Garrick says, "ha ha"
[Crows-Nest] Geoffrey says, "someone should probably add captainmorgan here"
[Crows-Nest] * CaptainMorgan has joined the channel.
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "Thanks."
Geoffrey says, "er, sir, I believe you had instructed me to sell that in order to cover some debts to insistent tradesmen"
Federic says, "If it was left on the dockside, I will consider it grounds for a blood-feud with Master Badpenny."
Bobby says, "You could make a new one."
Federic says, "Yes, certainly that is what happened. The knave will pay for this insult."
[Crows-Nest] Leik says, "Master Badpenny is the worst Bond knock-off character ever"
[Crows-Nest] Geoffrey says, "ah, mister badpenny, you turn up again"
Bobby says, "There might even be some extra sails that we're not using."
Bobby says, "We can hang them underneath the bottom of the ship for you."
Leik says, "Perhaps Geoffrey could catch some Ruqs"
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "Ha ha"
Bobby says, "And then we'll wake you up after we land."
Federic collars a passing sailor. "Here, take this unspeakable urchin and teach him how to splice cable or something. Put those criminal fingers to some good purpose."
[S7S] ctate says (to Federic), "excellent"
GM says, "And you raise your sky-sails and fly off into the sunset."
Bobby distracts the sailor with a bit of sleight-of-hand using a coin he slipped out of Federic's pocket earlier.
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "So, let's see."
[S7S] Federic says, "a coin? in *my* pocket? ha"
[S7S] GM says, "(whoops, channel)"
[S7S] Federic says, "good luck trying to pass that"
Bobby asks (of Reginald), "Hey, so what's on that map? Where're we going?"
Sailor runs up to Garrick. "Captain, sir, we're coming up to the Sky of Stones. Reduce speed?"
Garrick says (to Sailor), "Yes, bring us to a stop while we all go below and examine the charts."
Garrick asks (of Reginald), "Why don't we go and see this map of yours?"
Federic notes Reginald's reappearance on deck, mutters something about a dreadful head cold, and retires to hold his head over a bowl of hot water, towel-draped
Leik says, "Indeed! I have a small carved ship that we can place on the map and maneuver about as we plan."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Leik), "ha ha"
Bobby asks (of Leik), "What's it do?"
Garrick says (to Leik), "Very well, but prevent the boy from making 'pow-pow-pow' noises as he shoots the imaginary cannon."
Garrick leads everyone down to the chart room.
Bobby exclaims (at Garrick), "Aw, I told you last time, I didn't *know* that was your job!"
[S7S] Garrick exclaims, "ha!"
Leik says (to Bobby), "It lets us make strategic decisions more clearly."
Leik whispers to Bobby, "And be sure to make the pow-pow-pow noises next to Federic."
Federic looks *very* interested in an obscure map pinned in a darkened corner
Reginald says, "Oh, all right."
Garrick says (to Federic), "Oh, _that_ map. Sad to say, the stories of the ladies who live there are entirely inaccurate."
Garrick exclaims, "Why, was shot at with a musket!"
[S7S] Garrick says, "er, I was"
Reginald spreads out the map along with five layers of marked transparencies on top of it.
Federic mutters "if the dithering, vindictive old louse would just pull his head out of his stern and set our course..."
Garrick asks (of Reginald), "Nice work, who drew it?"
Reginald says, "I... obtained this from a Crailese sailor some seasons ago."
[S7S] GM says, "(These maps are standard, as the sky is 3d)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hey, fancy"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Will the model ship fit in between the transparencies?"
Reginald says, "It's a widder-high map of the Sky of Stones, the one I used the last time through. The markings in red are the corrections we made at the time."
Bobby asks, "What are the green ones?"
Reginald says, "As you can see, this is the main trade route through the area."
Reginald says, "Marked in green, right."
[S7S] Leik says, "I also have small paper ones that fit between the transparencies"
[S7S] Leik says, "they were made by my friend Avalon Hill"
Bobby asks, "And the yellow dots?"
[S7S] Reginald says, "Ha"
Reginald says (to Bobby), "That's the route we took when we lost the cargo."
[Crows-Nest] schep says, "oh, that's just mustard"
Bobby says, "Oh."
Bobby asks, "What's that purple blob?"
Reginald says, "That's where my pen leaked! Sheesh."
Reginald glares at Bobby.
Bobby looks innocent.
Garrick asks, "So, where do we need to go?"
[S7S] Federic says, "look innocent is a TN20 for the likes of ye"
Reginald says, "We're looking for the ship itself, which was lost on a particularly large rock--the crew and I managed to escape in the life boats."
Garrick says, "Bearing in mind that the stone may well have moved."
Reginald nods.
[S7S] Bobby says, "Let's see, Deception + Griffin (enhance aura) + standing in front of the lantern to create a halo effect..."
[S7S] Leik says, "hah"
Leik asks, "Were there markers on the rock to distinguish it from the myriad other rocks?"
Leik idly moves the ship over the map making quiet 'swoosh swoosh' noises.
Federic asks, "perchance the large crashed ship sticking from one side of it?"
Geoffrey asks, "perhaps we could retrace the yellow trail he has marked, sir?"
Geoffrey says, "though I could not say how the trails through the stones have shifted since then"
Leik says, "or whether the ship is intact enough to see"
Garrick says, "It's as good a starting point as we'll find."
Leik says, "The rocks bang together as if a mad musician were in charge of them"
Bobby exclaims, "I've seen him!"
Federic mutters to Garrick, "one would do well to consider why he strayed from the main trade route; even if he had an unlawful cargo, it's not as if these skies are policed. Someone was after him."
Bobby asks, "Down on the corner of Elmhurst and Second Byway, on the east side of town?"
Bobby asks, "With the big top hat turned upside down on the ground in front of him?"
Federic asks, "Maybe someone still is. Can we be sure of the crew?"
Garrick says (to Federic), "An excellent point."
Leik says, "You know, we never did hear why we needed to be stopped."
Garrick asks (of Reginald), "Would anyone else be looking for this ship?"
Bobby asks (of Leik), "Isn't that the usual way to leave places?"
Reginald says (to Garrick), "Oh, I'm sure nobody will."
Reginald says, "I paid the crew that escaped with me hazardous pay, which I'm sure was enough."
Garrick says (to Federic), "You are entirely correct and we will be fighting someone over this."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hazardous pay = exploding coins, poisoned bank-notes, that kind of thing"
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha"
Leik says, "Exactly how much did you pay? Relative to the normal amount, I mean."
Reginald says, "Twice. Which was convenient, as we lost the other half of the crew."
Federic says (to Garrick), "I'll see if I can pump the crew for anything. Maybe one of them served on the first voyage. Maybe one of them is a spy for Reginald's enemies."
Garrick starts staring at the map, computing distances.
Reginald says, "So it's not like I was really out anything."
Leik says, "Except the ship."
Garrick moves the wooden ship around, making little 'put-put' noises under his breath.
Federic slips out and goes to start a dice game with some crew-members
[S7S] Leik says (to Garrick), "see? It's very calming."
Garrick says, "Hmm, looks like we can start off down the main channel."
Garrick says, "And if this side-channel is still open, that'd be a good start."
[S7S] GM says (to Federic), "How do you want to do that? (Like, what do you want to roll.)"
[S7S] Federic says, "I'm going to use Disarmingly Frank to see if I can win the trust of any crew member with useful information"
Bobby asks (of Reginald), "Why did you take a special course?"
[S7S] GM says, "Sure--just roll and we'll see what kind of result you get (5 trivial to 13 difficult, as per p161)"
[S7S] Federic asks, "which is a Good skill, so... 2d6?"
Bobby asks, "On the yellow dots instead of the green line?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Good == +2, I believe."
[S7S] GM says, "Everything is 2d6 (except for Duels, sometimes); Good is +2."
Federic rolls 2 6-sided dice: 6 1 | 7 + 2 = 9
[S7S] GM asks, "That's a Good result. I can make up something, but would you like to?"
[S7S] Federic says, "sure"
Reginald says (to Bobby), "Oh, we were trying to make it through faster--if you see here [flip flip] the green channel makes several twists and turns, and we were trying to make it through faster."
Federic loses three brass pennies, but manages to identify a couple of crew members who sailed on the first voyage. They're edgy and close-mouthed, and have been promised *triple* wages. The rest of the crew resents them.
[S7S] GM says, "Excellent."
Bobby says, "Oh."
Bobby asks (of Garrick), "Does it really work that way?"
Garrick says, "Hmm. There's a reason the main channel is the main channel. Maybe if someone was chasing you that would be something to try."
Federic says, "...and as for your new Captain, well, he's a good-natured old tar, but push him an inch... why, I remember an attempted mutiny off the shoulder of the Sky of Fire, and he just took the tiller and wouldn't steer for safety until they swore to back down."
Bobby asks (of Reginald), "Was somebody chasing you?"
Reginald says (to Bobby), "You ask too many questions, kid."
Federic says, "Anyhow, I've lost enough, you bastards of rotten whelks. Another time, perhaps."
Bobby says, "Yeah."
Bobby loudly stage whispers (to Garrick), "I think that's a yes."
Reginald glares at bobby and refuses to say anything more.
[S7S] GM asks, "You get style points when your Foible does something, right?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yeah"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Cool."
[S7S] GM asks, "Is there a standard number of points you get?"
[system] * Scheduled database dump beginning now (Sat Feb 2 14:33:55 2008).
[system] * Scheduled database dump completed (Sat Feb 2 14:34:10 2008).
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yes, but I'm not sure if this is a 1-point situation or a 2d6 situation"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "but those seem to be the two standards"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "That's a big difference!"
[S7S] GM says, "Well, OK, is he hiding something big or something small? ;-)"
[S7S] schep says, "I think the 2d6 was if it caused Something Bad"
[S7S] GM says, "Ah, right."
[S7S] GM says, "Why not."
GM rolls 2 6-sided dice: 1 1| 2
[S7S] Bobby says, "Ha."
[S7S] GM exclaims (at Bobby), "You get 2 style points!"
[S7S] GM says, "Wow, cheapest Something Bad ever."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ok, it looks like you get 1 style point just for your foible being triggered, a couple extra if you play up a big failure/workaround, and 2d6 for something unresistably bad happening to you"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "and a point for being swashbuckly, or helping to advance the plot"
[S7S] Bobby exclaims, "I have doomed us all! For two rerolls!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "(Or whatever you use them for. I can't remember now.)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hee hee"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "+2 to rolls"
[S7S] Geoffrey exclaims, "or you could create two NPCs!"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "and throw them in front of the danger"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "What page is the bit on spending them on?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "193"
[S7S] Bobby says (to Geoffrey), "Hmm. Arguably, if I brought it on myself, it wasn't irresistable."
[S7S] GM asks (of Federic), "You good with your Disarmingly Frank bit? NPCs you can query later about something?"
[S7S] Federic says, "yeah, I think so"
[S7S] GM says, "Perfect."
[S7S] Federic says, "I was thinking more of getting Bobby to tail them"
[S7S] Bobby exclaims, "You're just trying to get rid of me!"
Garrick says, "Very well, let's get underway again."
[S7S] Federic says, "that is merely a side-benefit of my masterful scheme"
Garrick heads back up to start the ship moving.
GM exclaims, "So! After pausing a bit, you sail into the Green Channel from the Sky of Thunder into the Sky of Stones!"
[S7S] GM says, "I can't help but think of Empire Strikes Back for this."
[S7S] Garrick says, "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "Flying through the asteroid field."
[S7S] Leik exclaims, "skyworm!"
Federic takes a turn in the crow's-nest, eyes peeled
Geoffrey sits on deck blacking Federic's other pair of boots.
[S7S] GM says, "Hee yay"
[Crows-Nest] schep asks, "Are there also lookout points underneath?"
[Crows-Nest] GM says, "Yeah."
Federic says (to Bobby), "Lad, I want you to keep an eye on those two mangy sky-rats: Belcher and Hocke. If they're conniving or sneaking off, I want to know about it. Do a good job and I'll teach you to fire a pistol, against my better judgement."
[S7S] GM says, "Ha."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
GM tosses Federic a style point.
[S7S] Leik says, "yay"
Bobby ponders. "Yeah, alright. But you owe me one!"
[S7S] Federic says, "got to motivate a kid somehow"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Indeed."
GM says, "There are stronger winds in the green channel, which tend to keep the rocks away, but also make navigation a bit more difficult. Fortunately, you have an expert navigator who guides you through with ease."
Bobby scouts out the deck and spots the two of them standing together near the starboard lines. He slips behind a cnveniently nearby pile of crates to eavesdrop on them a bit.
Garrick keeps watch for the channel they need, one eye on the map.
Hocke asks (of Belcher), "Well, it's away. You sure about that glider?"
Belcher says (to Hocke), "Yup."
Hocke says (to Belcher), "I just don't want to be stranded out here again."
Belcher says (to Hocke), "Yup."
Hocke asks (of Belcher), "And the others?"
Belcher says (to Hocke), "Yup."
Hocke says, "OK, good."
[S7S] Garrick asks, "Belcher is Laconic*, huh?"
Belcher says, "<burp>"
[S7S] Federic says, "or Dropped On Head At Birth*"
Hocke says, "Oh, sheesh, breathe the other way already."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Or Dropped On Head At Berth."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
GM says (to Federic), "Up in the crow's nest, you've been idly watching one of the larger stones drift by."
GM says, "It's about three times the size of the ship, but isn't moving very fast, and the ship is staying well away from it."
Bobby scrambles away to find Garrick.
Bobby asks (of Garrick), "Hey, what's a glider?"
Federic composes a heartfelt and utterly atrocious ode to the scullery-maid he left in Crail
Garrick says (to Bobby), "It's a kind of flying ship that is very fast but doesn't work well."
Garrick asks, "Why, kid?"
Bobby says, "Those guys that Federic wanted me to watch and tell him what they said were talking about one."
Garrick says, "Hmm, not good."
Garrick says, "Go up and Federic to keep an extra-sharp eye out."
Bobby asks, "@think Should I tell Federic too?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "(Whoops.)"
Bobby says, "Oh, alright."
Garrick says, "One of those could come up on us pretty quick. Luckily they can't carry cannon."
Bobby throws a pebble at Federic to get his attention, then climbs up after him.
Garrick has a word with Leik, who is acting as Master Gunner.
Federic isn't enough of a skysailor to distinguish unusual flying-rock behaviour, and continues trying to find a rhyme for 'radiant'
Garrick says (to Leik), "Make sure we have some grapeshot handy. It's good for taking out a glider if one shows up."
Bobby exclaims (at Federic), "Hey!"
Leik says (to Garrick), "Will do."
Federic says, "This had better be very good indeed, horrible child."
Leik lets the gunners know to load with grape (taking care not to be near the powder store), then finds his wingcloak.
Bobby says (to Federic), "They said that there is a glider coming, because they don't want to get stranded."
Bobby eyes Federic's holster.
Federic says, "Good enough. Now, I talked about this with Uncle Leik, and he's a much better shot than me, so we agreed that he should give you the pistol-lesson. Run along now, and be sure to take a pistol and powder-horn from the armoury. Here's a requisition slip."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hee hee"
GM exclaims, "Just as the ship is slipping past the large rock, the rock itself seems to explode, as things fly off of it from all directions!"
Leik exclaims, "!"
Bobby asks, "OK! So instead of standing up here and shooting at things down there, you want me to go down there and shoot at things up here?"
[Crows-Nest] ctate says, "Curse you, Red Baron!"
Garrick exclaims, "Batten down the hatches! Lower the stuns'l!"
Geoffrey looks up in surprise and then begins packing away his boot-polishing kit.
[S7S] Garrick asks, "so, is it rocks or not-rocks?"
Bobby just ducks.
GM says, "And from behind it swarm a cloud of rickety things that are something like 2-man hang gliders."
Federic is jarred out of the crow's nest, and is only saved by catching at a cable
[S7S] Garrick says, "ah ha"
Leik exclaims, "Ready the cannons! Starboard side!"
GM says, "Meanwhile, you finally figure out what it is that's come off the rocks--it's red-skinned men, with red wingcloaks, the exact same color as the rock."
Reginald says, "Oh no not again."
[Crows-Nest] ctate says, "see? red baron."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
Federic exclaims, "Prepare for boarding! Every man to his cutlass!"
[Crows-Nest] Geoffrey says, "excellent"
Bobby exclaims, "Bad guys!"
Federic swarms down the rigging, yelling orders
Leik grins. "Wingcloaks. Idiots. PEPPER SHOT IN ALL MUSKETS! AIM FOR THE FABRIC!"
Garrick begins directing the crew: gun crews to Leik, marines to their weapons, and the skeleton crew to maintain trim and steerage.
Reginald exclaims, "YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME! NEVER!"
Leik says, "Right, I want a stagger-shot pattern, alternating cannons. If you've got a thick cluster of wingmen, take them out first because they're too stupid to be allowed to live, but otherwise aim for the gliders."
Federic loses his face-scarf in the confusion, curses, pulls his hat-brim lower
Reginald runs and tries to take over one of the cannons!
Geoffrey goes below and retrieves his personal case of effects.
[S7S] GM says, "So! Everybody tell me what you want to do, and we'll go through the list."
Leik pulls a pair of ornate goggles from a pocket of his wingcloak and puts them on before cursing at a powder monkey, "I told you, keep the powder away from me!"
Federic says, "Even spacing around the deck. Be ready to guard the helm and the powder-room."
Garrick exclaims (at Reginald), "Go below and tell the carpenter and surgeon to get ready!"
[S7S] Leik says, "directing cannon fire"
Reginald exclaims, "No, we have to get them!"
[S7S] Garrick says, "I'm going to get Reginald below"
[S7S] GM says, "There are many wingmen, several gliders, and, right, Reginald."
Garrick exclaims, "We will!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Magically swinging beams to knock down some wingmen."
Reginald points the canon at a cluster of wingmen. Of course, your larboard sail is also in that direction.
[Crows-Nest] ctate says, "ha"
Federic exclaims, "Get that landlubber idiot below!"
Garrick pulls out his truncheon and taps Reginald smartly in the back of the head.
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I am fetching Federic his extra pistols and shot."
[S7S] Garrick says, "hey, gotta use that technique somehow"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
Bobby climbs from the nest out onto one of the beams.
Leik says, "Sweet Vaoz, he is why the concept of friendly stabbing was invented"
[Crows-Nest] ctate says, "the swashbuckling equivalent of an own-goal"
Garrick says (to Leik), "Just remember that an enemy wingman snuck onto deck from beneath us."
Federic asks, "Good man, Geoffrey. Did you happen to see where my spare cravat went?"
[Crows-Nest] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
Geoffrey says, "right here, sir"
Federic remasks
[S7S] GM says, "Yay"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "anyway, 2d6+4+1d6? (Expert Falcon + Truncheon!)?"
[S7S] GM says (to Garrick), "Right; go for it."
Garrick rolls 3 6-sided dice: 3 1 6 | 10 + 4 = 14
Leik says (to Garrick), "Right. Federic should take care of them, though my second can take over the fusillade if I must leap into the fray."
[S7S] Garrick says, "hopefully I get enough to knock him out"
Leik says, "Tell Federic Bobby thinks he won't remember that wingmen can get behind us and all will be well."
[S7S] Garrick says, "I have no idea how that works, really"
[S7S] GM says (to Garrick), "Yeah, go ahead and rp."
[S7S] GM says, "How that works is I gesticulate wildly."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I think all contests work the same way"
(From Garrick) Reginald slumps to the deck, as Garrick steps over him and re-directs the cannon to a safer location.
[S7S] Bobby asks (of Geoffrey), "So the wild gesticulation is actually a standardized rule?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hee hee"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "exactly"
Garrick says, "You, man, carry him down to the surgeon. Um, tell the surgeon he might be delierious, so he should be tied down for his own good."
Federic, Professionally Nervous as ever, watches for stray wingmen aiming for the rigging or encircling the ship
[S7S] GM says, "Leik! Cannons."
[Crows-Nest] Garrick says, "I'm tempted to put him in the brig for the rest of the session :)"
Leik exclaims, "Wait for them -- grape has a terrible range -- wait -- wait -- first rank, fire!"
Federic says (to marines), "Be ready to grab a wingcloak. If one of them goes under the ship and tries to take the rudder-chain..."
Leik rolls 2 6-sided dice: 2 5 | 7 + 4 = 11
[Crows-Nest] Bobby exclaims, "That's what he gets for not answering my questions!"
[S7S] GM says, "Whoops, guess I should have set a TN."
[Crows-Nest] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[Crows-Nest] ctate says, "don't shoot til you see the reds of their noses!"
[S7S] Leik says, "I suggest 10"
[S7S] GM says, "Hee hee"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is this time for the brute-fighting rules?"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, that makes sense."
[system] * Guenni has joined the channel.
[S7S] GM looks up rules and stuff.
[S7S] GM says, "OK, we'll say the wingmen are Good, we have some Expert gliders and some Master gliders."
[system] Jaybird says, "This channel is seldom used for actual conversation. But the mud broadcasts messages here when database dumps begin and complete. I don't know if there's any other times the mud announces stuff here."
[S7S] GM says, "And if you overhit 9/11/13 (depending), you take out that many of them."
[S7S] GM says, "So an 11 is good enough to take out 2 wingmen."
[S7S] GM asks, "Sound OK?"
[S7S] Leik says, "sure"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is the total number of wingmen known (to you, at least)?"
[S7S] Leik says, "I mean, 4 sounds even better, but I'll take what I can get"
[S7S] GM asks (of Bobby), "What, don't you trust me?"
[S7S] (from Garrick) GM says, "Sure, enough to make this take long enough but not too long."
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Sure, if you say you know, I'll gladly take your word for it..."
[S7S] GM says, "Man, you guys are on to me."
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "hmm, are there really no rules for mook squads in non-duels?"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, that was a bit surprising."
[S7S] Leik says, "weird"
[S7S] GM says, "But this part is before they have a chance to attack you, so."
[S7S] GM says, "Anyway."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Hmm. There is something that suggests that a mook squad is either an extended challenge or a duel. So I would think they would work as extended challenges."
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "but ok, so we're saying a 9 takes out 1 good guy, an 11 takes out 2 good gys or 1 expert guy, 13 takes out 3 good, 2 master, or 1 expert?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "yeah, but I don't see what the rules are for how many dice they roll there"
[S7S] GM says (to Geoffrey), "4 good for the last."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to GM), "okey doke"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "do we declare in advance which we're aiming for?"
[S7S] GM says, "(and actually, the ties-go-to-the-attacker thing is a bit weird, since technically it'd be taking out 0 of them)"
[S7S] Federic says, "well, there's kind of a limit to how swashbuckly you can be outside a duel, so I guess the system's set up to encourage duels with named NPCs rather than lots and lots of massed mook melee"
[S7S] GM says, "(but taking out 1 seems reasonable, or I'll let you declare some Fact about them that'll give them a disadvantage or something)"
[S7S] GM says, "Massed Mook Melee! I like it."
[S7S] GM says, "And yes, pre-declare which you're going after."
[S7S] GM says, "Federic! I declare you're going next."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I am assisted Federic with my valet skills to get him additional firearms"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "After Leik rp's taking out a couple wingmen!"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "er, assisting"
[S7S] Federic asks, "with what? have they reached the deck yet?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(+2)"
[S7S] GM asks, "Perfect. +2 or +dice?"
[S7S] GM says (to Fed), "You could shoot the ones that are closer before you Fence them next turn, maybe."
Leik watches with a grim satisfaction as the grape turns one wingman's cloak into tatters and sending him spiraling into a second. Tangled, they both begin a long fall down.
Leik exclaims, "Right! Ready second rank! First rank, re-LOAD!"
[S7S] Federic says, "okay, I'll start firing with a pistol in each hand, handing off empties to the good valet"
[S7S] GM asks, "At wingmen or glider-people?"
Federic rolls 2 6 -sided dice: 6 4 | 10 + 4 = 14
[S7S] Federic says, "wingmen"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Got 5!"
Geoffrey says, "your pistol, sir .. your additional pistol .. your backup pistol .. the pistol you don't like very much but is the only one left"
Federic pirouettes around the deck, arms extended, picking off wingmen as they crash through the rigging, tossing spent pistols to Geoffrey and catching fresh ones out of the air
[Crows-Nest] ctate says (to Geoffrey), "hee hee"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "And finally--Bobby!"
GM tosses a style point to Geoffrey.
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Are the wingmen mostly gone now, or is there still a big crowd of them?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "To decide which to aim for.)"
[Crows-Nest] ctate says, "GRAMS: blue danube waltz"
[S7S] GM says (to Bobby), "There's probably 20 or so left still."
[S7S] Federic says, "now if only my Show-Off technique was unchained"
[S7S] GM says, "Heh."
Bobby clings to one of the loose beams and pulls to the right, setting it swinging around in a broad arc through the middle of the approaching swarm.
[S7S] Bobby says, "That'll be Magic/Pegasus + Scenery."
[S7S] GM says, "Sounds good to me."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Two techniques and a Good."
Bobby rolls 4 6-sided dice: 1 4 2 3 | 10 + 2 = 12
[S7S] Federic says, "oof"
Bobby hits one in the back of the head, knocking him cold and dropping him to the deck. Another is hit in the stomach and caught doubled-over, draped over the beam. A third is caught by his cloak, which yanks him off course and tosses him flailing through the sky to parts unknown.
[S7S] GM exclaims, "And, now they're on you!"
[S7S] GM says, "And suddenly the Duel rules make more sense to me."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Oh?"
[S7S] GM says, "So here's the scoop: Various groups will be attacking you, and whatever dice you hold back for defence you can use vs. everyone. You can still attack, but only vs. one group."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "So we might roll our defensive dice multiple times?"
[S7S] GM says, "Right."
Federic exclaims (at crew), "Drive them back, you miserable pack of stinking whoresons!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Or not at all, I suppose."
[S7S] GM says, "I think."
[S7S] GM says, "Ha, that would be mean."
[S7S] GM says, "Hrm."
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Well, unless we came up with a clever plan."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Where one person created a diversion, so everyone else could put all their dice into offense."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I do not actually expect us to do anything like that, of course."
[S7S] Leik says, "I throw Bobby into their midst"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "it says "the defense roll stands against all opponents" but I don't know if that means the *dice* stand or the actual total does"
[S7S] Federic says, "maybe this is the time for the ship to catch fire"
[S7S] GM says, "The other thing I suppose is that the attackers are trying to disable the ship, so defending is a matter of deciding whether to take damage yourself or let the ship take it. Or, um, something."
[S7S] GM says, "Lemme look up ship combat rules."
[S7S] Bobby says (to Geoffrey), "It seems weird for your defense total to be known before someone decides whether or not to attack you."
[S7S] Federic says, "well, it should be fairly obvious whether an opponent is fighting recklessly or cautiously"
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Hmm. So a successful defense means getting hurt, and a failed defense means the ship gets hurt? That seems... odd."
[S7S] GM says (to Geoffrey), "Let's decide now--I think I'm in favor of re-rolls for defense dice."
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "well, step 1 is that you pair people off into who's attacking who"
[S7S] Bobby says (to Federic), "Right, that would be indicated by how many dice they were using."
[S7S] GM says (to Bobby), "No, a failed defense means you decide whether to take damage yourself or have the ship take damage."
[S7S] Bobby says (to GM), "Oh, right."
[S7S] GM says, "(it actually looks like the First Mate is responsible for damage distribution)"
[S7S] Garrick says (to bobby), "no, a successful defense is no damage. a failed defense is deciding who takes damage"
[S7S] Garrick says, "Hmm, our first mate is knocked out and tied up"
[S7S] Garrick says, "tricky"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I vote he takes the damage"
[S7S] GM says, "So we'll give that job to the captain."
[S7S] GM laughs.
[S7S] GM says, "Bah, now I'm confused again."
[S7S] Federic says, "another question, just to confuse things"
[S7S] GM says, "At any rate: you will all get attacked by wingmen, and there are four groups of gliders who will also be attacking the ship itself (2 Expert, 2 Master)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "sounds good"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "how many wingmen per person?"
[S7S] GM says, "If anyone is doing something that can reasonably be called 'defense of the ship' or 'attacking the gliders' you'll Duel with them."
[S7S] GM says, "I was imagining 30 total; you've taken out 10, there are five of you, so 4 each."
[S7S] Federic asks, "an Idiom, like any technique, gives you +1d6 to a roll, but only if you describe your action appropriately. How do you get it if you narrate failure or success *after* the roll?"
[S7S] GM says (to Federic), "Ha ha ha"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Federic says, "I mean, it's kind of hard to describe being awesome before you know if you've succeeded"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I guess some people may prefer to fight gliders rather than wingmen"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "but I can probably handle 8 wingmen"
[S7S] Bobby asks (of Federic), "What is the Idiom?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "and I imagine so can some other people"
[S7S] Garrick says, "I was going to shoot at some gliders and then fence with a wingman or several"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "being awesome, he said"
[S7S] GM says, "Well, OK, there can be 50 wingmen."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Federic says (to Bobby), "fencing: show-off"
[S7S] (from Geoffrey) GM says "I'm flexible"
[system] Guenni says, "Well, the topic sounded as if it couldn't hurt to know what's announced here. If it's not that often, it probabbly won't even get on ones nerves even if it's not really helpful."
[S7S] Bobby says (to Federic), "Oh, ah. Well, I can't *imagine* how you could possibly fail as a result of showing off..."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "also, this is one of those things where you narrate yourself as being awesome either way, but if you fail the roll you narrate them running away to another part of the ship and hence not being defeated"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "or somebody treacherously attacking you from behind or whatever"
[system] schep says, "about once an hour"
[S7S] GM says, "I suppose the game assumes that you'll describe things cleverly enough and that if you don't, people will just yell "Bad form!" and make you re-describe."
[S7S] Leik says (to GM), "yeah, that'd work"
[S7S] Federic says, "'kay"
[S7S] Leik says, "more awesomeness, less talking"
[system] Jaybird exclaims, "Other channels you might be interested in are... #coding for talking about Jotacode programming. Also, most IF languages have their own channels. There are lots and lots more!"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Sounds good to me!"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "hmm, if you kill the defender in the first half, do they get to retaliate in the second?"
[S7S] GM says, "Allocate dice, we'll have everyone attack, and then you can attack back."
[S7S] Federic says, "so, lessee, I'm Expert (+4), plus Sabre, Shipboard, and maybe the Idiom. You get 3d6 for your Swashbuckling Forte at base, right? So 5d6+4, 6d6+4 contingent on awesomeness"
[S7S] GM asks, "I think it's simultaneous?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to GM), "sounds reasonable -- that's how it is for ship combat, at least"
[S7S] GM says, "Right."
[S7S] GM says (to Federic), "So that's (potentially) 3d6+4 defense / 3d6 + 4 attack."
[S7S] GM says, "Or redistribute the dice as needed."
[S7S] Federic says, "and the bonus applies to both attack and defence? awesome"
[S7S] GM says, "Exactly."
[S7S] Leik says, "expert(+4), outnumbered!, saber!, Fierce!, so 6d6+4, which I'll do as 4d6+4 attack/2d6+4 defense"
[S7S] Garrick says, "so it's 3d6+fortes+techniques? then I'm at, um, 4d6+6 total (I'm fencing), which I guess I'll split to 3d6+4 attack and 1d6+2 defense"
[S7S] Leik says, "if someone's willing to team up to fence with me for the next round, I'll make my way to you this round"
[S7S] Federic says, "okay, I'll assign the dice equally as inky said"
[S7S] GM says (to Leik), "Yay 'with a partner'"
[S7S] Leik says, "then I get With a Partner! thrown in"
[S7S] Federic exclaims (at Leik), "heads up!"
[S7S] Leik says, "excellent"
[S7S] Geoffrey exclaims, "I am going to duck behind a capstan or something, so I can emerge while unnoticed! and stealthily! with a knife!"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "so I will roll 4d6+6 / 2d6+6"
Federic springs onto the railing with a flourish and dances a waltz down its length, slashing at wingmen as they swoop past
GM exclaims, "The wingmen attack Federic!"
Federic exclaims, "Unheard-of! Rats trying to *board* a stinking ship!"
[S7S] Leik says (to Federic), "excellent"
[S7S] GM says, "And actually, 4 is way too few, so I think I'll go ahead and bump that number up if you don't mind."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yeah, I figured"
[S7S] Federic says, "MYSTERIOUS AMBUSH"
[S7S] GM says, "Next time I'll just say that there's 100 from the get-go."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(though of course the being-outnumbered thing kicks in at some point)"
[S7S] Bobby exclaims, "Aw. He can just have mine!"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "my I think 7 or 8 are more like a standard challenge for reasonably combat-optimized folks"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "er, s/my/but"
[S7S] Bobby says, "(And I could go for a glider or soemthing.)"
[S7S] Federic asks, "okay, roll defence first?"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, we'll say four groups of 8 since they don't think Bobby's a real threat."
[S7S] GM gesticulates wildly.
[S7S] GM exclaims (at Federic), "Go for it!"
Federic rolls 3 6-sided dice: 6 6 6 | 18 + 4 = 22
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha ha"
[S7S] Leik says, "wow"
[S7S] Garrick says, "suh-weet"
[S7S] GM asks, "How many can you handle easily?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(good can handle 3, master can handle 5, expert can handle 7)"
[S7S] Bobby says, "And from now own, we shall call him Beast."
[S7S] GM says, "whoops, fone."
[S7S] GM says, "Heh. Friend, but wrong number (cell phone off-by-one error)"
Federic howls like a banshee, dancing between blows without missing a step or a beat
[S7S] Federic says (to Geoffrey), "master is better than expert"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(and I guess if these guys are Good, then 3 ranks of damage takes one out)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Fedric), "whoops, right"
[S7S] GM asks, "Do my mooks also have to divide dice?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yes"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "they get one bonus die for being in a squad"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "plus one bonus die for each one over how many a person can handle"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(looking at p 223 here)"
[S7S] GM says, "Which is one in this case."
[S7S] GM says, "So, 4d6+2 all told."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Hmm. Is a glider one enemy or two people on one craft?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "it seems like if you take out the pilot ..."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(but I guess maybe they can still attack back twice)"
[S7S] GM says, "Might as well go for 3d6 attack, 1d6 defense."
GM rolls 3 6-sided dice: 1 1 5 | 7 + 2 = 9
[S7S] GM says, "They fail! You can rp."
[S7S] GM says, "(if you haven't had enough already ;-)"
GM exclaims, "Meanwhile, more of them attack Geoffrey!"
[S7S] GM says, "And you can handle all of them, so they just get 3d6."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "here is my attack roll:"
Geoffrey rolls 4 6-sided dice: 1 1 6 3 | 11 + 6 = 17
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "and here is my defense roll:"
Geoffrey rolls 2 6-sided dice: 3 2 | 5 + 6 = 11
[S7S] GM says, "Which, heck, ther'll just put toward attacking."
GM rolls 3 6-sided dice: 5 1 4 | 10 + 2 = 12
[S7S] GM says, "And their defense is 2! So you take them all out, but they take you down one rank of something, your choice."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hmm -- they should actually be rolling 3d6+2, I think"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(for being Good)"
Federic says, "I've owned horses who could fence better than that! Guard *up*, *extend* the arm, step step *step*..."
[S7S] GM says, "They did."
[S7S] GM says, "They allocated zero dice to defense."
[S7S] Federic rolls attack
[S7S] GM asks, "Right?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "oh, so they did, sorry"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Whew!"
Federic rolls 3 6-sided dice: 5 6 6 | 17 + 4 = 21
[S7S] GM says (to Geoffrey), "You don't have to attack that group if you don't want--remember there are the gliders."
[S7S] GM says, "Man, 6's."
GM rolls 1 6-sided die: 3 | 3 + 2 = 5
Geoffrey steps out from being the capstan and starts walking towards a squad of wingmen as they land. By the time he's halfway there they notice the handful of knives, but it's too late for them to move -- he's already buried four of them in people's chests. When he arrives at the fifth man, he slits his throat directly.
[S7S] GM says, "(that's all of them)"
[S7S] GM says, "(for both of you)"
Federic says, "It's clear that you're incapable of learning through simple instruction. Allow me to teach a little by example."
[S7S] Leik says, "nice"
Geoffrey says, "(but sadly this is a little too vulgar for a true Barathi and I lose a rank there)"
Federic thrust slash whirl *thunk* *thunk* *thunk*
[S7S] GM says, "(er, the 'don't have to attack that group' should have been ..Federic, but hey)"
Leik, as the wingmen reach the ship, growls low in his throat and runs at mast. He flips off of it, spreads his cloak wide, and glides rapidly through a cluster of enemy wingmen, saber swinging.
GM asks, "And that's a Story Hook for later! 'not as honorable a Barathi as he might be' or something?"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Yay!"
GM tosses Leik a style point.
Geoffrey says, "works for me"
[S7S] Leik exclaims, "woo!"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "excellent"
[S7S] Leik says, "attack:"
Leik rolls 4 6-sided dice: 4 3 2 4 | 13 + 4 = 17
[S7S] Leik says, "and defense"
Leik rolls 2 6-sided dice: 5 6 | 11 + 4 = 15
[S7S] GM says, "(I can already tell my style points are a bit haphazard; don't be sad if I don't give you one for something you liked; it's just that sometimes I'm better about remembering)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(if folks are wondering about healing, it appears you can spend 1 style point to heal a rank in combat, and then at the end of combat if you haven't been zeroed out, you heal 2d6 ranks)"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is that 'and then' regardless of whether you spent the point earlier?"
[S7S] GM asks, "17 attack, 15 defense?"
[S7S] Leik says (to GM), "right"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "And how does that apply to damage done to the ship?"
[S7S] Federic says, "well, it looks as if we're clearing out the wingmen mooks and dealing with the tougher gliders last"
[S7S] GM says, "So: Wingmen attack/defense"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "yeah, regardless"
GM rolls 3 6-sided dice: 3 5 5 | 13 + 2 = 15
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "(you can spend as many or few style points as you want, also)"
GM rolls 1 6-sided die: 6 | 6 + 2 = 8
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I'm not sure what the rules are for ship-healing"
[S7S] Leik says, "the ship that cried"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "Hmm, ties go to the attacker so I guess you lose one rank of something."
[S7S] GM says (to Chad), "More rules for ties, please."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "especially bowties"
[S7S] GM says, "And you take out all 8."
[S7S] Bobby asks (of Geoffrey), "Which nation values them?"
[S7S] GM says, "That's the clothing of choice for Ilwuz."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha ha"
[S7S] Leik says, "I'll take a slice to the face that bloodies me and reduces my striking presence"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks (of GM), "wait, are you really giving these guys 3 damage ranks each?"
[S7S] GM asks, "?"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Oh!"
[S7S] GM says, "Hmm."
[S7S] GM says, "I was thinking they were 1 damage rank each."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "I admit I don't know how it works if you reduce some of the guys in the squad to average while the rest are still good"
[S7S] GM says, "But I guess that was thinking in the 7th Sea idiom."
[S7S] GM says, "OK, so if it takes 3 points to take out one of them, that makes a big difference."
[S7S] Leik hangs in midair while the camera pans around him.
[S7S] Federic says, "yeah, when one PC kills eight mooks in a turn it looks like heroism, when three PCs do it it looks suspicious"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "Ha"
[S7S] Leik says (to Federic), "hee"
[S7S] Bobby says, "'Damage applied to a Squad wound the individuals in a serial fashion, Zeroing Out one Mook or Minion at a time before moving onto the next one.'"
[S7S] GM says, "So that's 9 ranks for Leik, meaning only 3 guys."
[S7S] GM says, "And Federic did 16 ranks of damage, meaning 5.333 guys."
[S7S] Federic says, "damn those midget pirates"
[S7S] GM says, "And 15 for Geoffrey, meaning exactly 5."
[S7S] Bobby exclaims, "Off with his head! But save the rest for later!"
[S7S] GM says, "Whew."
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Finally: Garrick!"
Leik stabs one wingman, using his body as a platform from which to vault even higher. His second swing rips the cloak from a man, sending him plummeting to the deck unconscious. One dive and powerful thrust later and a third enemy is out of commission. He lands by where Federic is fighting.
[S7S] Bobby . o O ( Finally? )
[S7S] GM says, "(er, not finally finally, just the final mook-attacking-you bit)"
[S7S] Garrick asks, "okay, how many are attacking me?"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "8!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Aha."
[S7S] Leik says, "Nobody Listens to Bobby."
[S7S] Garrick says, "attack"
Garrick rolls 3 6-sided dice: 2 6 3 | 11 + 4 = 15
[S7S] Garrick says, "defense"
Garrick rolls 1 6-sided die: 5 | 5 + 2 = 7
Garrick pulls his saber and wards off the attacking wingmen.
[S7S] GM says, "And they're again 4d6 against you, which they'll divvy up just like everyone else; 3d6 attack 1d6 defense."
[S7S] GM says, "Attack:"
GM rolls 3 6-sided dice: 4 1 4 | 9 + 2 = 11
[S7S] GM says, "Defense:"
[Crows-Nest] Fang asks, "How does this dice system work?"
GM rolls 1 6-sided die: 3 | 3 + 2 = 5
[S7S] Garrick says, "so I hurt them and they hurt me? fair enough"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "So: You do 10 damage to them (3.333 guys) and they do 4 damage to you!"
[Crows-Nest] Bobby says, "2d6 + MOD for a standard roll, with extra dice thrown in for Techniques. Except in combat, when it gets a little weirder."
[S7S] GM says, "rp, and tell me what forte you're lowering first for you Story Hook."
[S7S] Garrick says, "I'm lowering 4 ranks of fortes? ow"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ow, 4 damage? you might want to put some onto the ship"
Leik asks (of Federic), "I see you are teaching fencing. Mind if I take lessons?"
Leik dashes blood from his eyes.
[S7S] Garrick says, "yeah. 2 for me, 2 for the ship"
[S7S] GM says, "(don't forget you can go to Poor or even Zero)"
[S7S] Garrick says, "Dropping my Wingman by 2 to Poor"
[S7S] Garrick says, "and I dunno what fortes the ship even has. something speed-related"
[S7S] GM says, "'Speed' is fine--damage to the sails, say."
Garrick removes three enemies from the fight, but the fourth slashes him across the back, and also slices the lines holding the jib-sail.
[Crows-Nest] Bobby asks, "Is that also a plot hook?"
[S7S] GM says, "(I guess we didn't actually stat the ship beforehand but anyway)"
[Crows-Nest] Bobby says, "Ilac."
[S7S] GM says (to Bobby), "Maybe so. Makes sense, actually."
[S7S] (from Geoffrey) Garrick says "Enough of that jibber-jabber!"
Federic says (to Leik), "I think you might embarrass your classmates. But perhaps a little further demonstration could knock some sense into their heads."
[S7S] GM says, "OK, the four of you have both attacked and defended, then. Bobby, do your thing and then we'll do the Glider attack."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "If the gliders haven't attacked yet, and the wingmen don't see me as a threat, can I safely put all my dice into offense?"
[S7S] Geoffrey exclaims, "nothing in life is safe!"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "except safes"
[S7S] Bobby says, "Since all of our skilled combatants are taking out the mooks, I figure I might as well jump in over my head and attack one of the Expert gliders."
[S7S] GM says, "The glider attack is going to be mostly vs. the ship except insofar as anyone can justify Defending with their Defence dice."
[S7S] GM says, "Sigh, 'defense'."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha, maga's getting to you"
[S7S] GM says, "Sounds good to me."
[S7S] Bobby says, "I'd like to use magic/griffin (to enhance my agility), plus urchin (for dirty fighting), and scenery!."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Since I don't have aspecific combat forte or mystical melee, I think that puts me at 4d6+4, if all of that is acceptable."
[S7S] GM says, "Actually, I think we're going with katre's rule (that Chad approved) that says that if you're applying your swash fort and/or Fencing in a duel, you get the extra die."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "OK. So that's 5d6+4?"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Ayup!"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I shall try not to object too strenuously."
[Crows-Nest] schep says, "I thought that's what the Swashbuckling Forte was for."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "So is a glider two enemies or one?"
[Crows-Nest] Bobby says, "I thought it was for the free techniques."
[Crows-Nest] Bobby says, "Since this way, it's not clear what mystical melee is for."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "And how much do I need to beat TN by to zero out an Expert?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "4, I guess"
[S7S] GM says, "Let's see."
[S7S] Bobby says (to Geoffrey), "Which question is that an answer to? :)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "For variety, let's build the gliders as Sidekicks."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is that like a henchman?"
[S7S] Geoffrey asks, "like, one step up from minions?"
[S7S] GM says, "Right."
[S7S] Bobby asks, "What does that mean mechanically?"
[S7S] GM says, "I'm working that out."
[S7S] GM says, "Maybe the Expert ones as Minions or something."
[S7S] GM says, "Sure."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hmm, I didn't notice the rules have both mooks and minions as separate things"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "but they seem identically mechanically"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "it looks to me based on 222 that sidekicks are like minions but with more fortes, and maybe techniques"
[S7S] GM says, "Two groups of two gliders (which happen to have 2 men each), fighting with Expert "Aerial Combat". Then two groups of two gliders (3 men each), fighting with Master "Aerial Combat" plus Average "Dodging""
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Are Minions just Mooks that are attached to another character?"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Bobby), "well, the technical distinction is that mooks don't have names and minions do, and mooks can have average or good fortes but minions have to have good"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, I dunno, the mechanics seem identical."
[S7S] GM says, "It's just how you stat them up or something."
[S7S] GM says (to Geoffrey), "Hmm, OK."
[S7S] Bobby asks (of GM), "So does that mean that for every 4 I beat the Expert TN (11) by, I eleminate one man?"
[S7S] GM says, "Bah, I've confused myself again."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "that seems right to me, anyway"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "whereas the other guys would take 2 hits to zero dodging and 5 to zero master aerial combat"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "hmm"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ok, I think the other deal is sidekicks don't join up in squads"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah."
[S7S] Bobby says, "Which means that with multi-man gliders, sidekicks would be awkward."
[S7S] GM says, "But I am going to declare that by joining together, these guys became a Sidekick."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] Bobby says, "'No, we're not really together. We both just happen to be here independently hanging from the same glider.'"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "just like voltron"
[S7S] GM says, "There we go."
[S7S] Bobby asks (of GM), "Wait, so if they're joined together, does that mean that beating the TN by 4 takes out the whole glider?"
[S7S] GM says, "So, 4 sidekicks that happen to have multiple bodies for color/description purposes."
[S7S] Bobby says, "(2 simple expert sidekicks, and 2 milti-forted ones?)"
[S7S] Federic says, "less rule-wrangling, more awesome"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "And can you attack two sidekicks at once?"
[S7S] GM says (to Fed), "Hee"
[S7S] Bobby exclaims (at Federic), "I just needed to know if I'm going to want to throw in a style point!"
[S7S] GM says, "Yeah, treat it as four groups of fortes."
[S7S] GM exclaims, "And attack!"
Bobby grabs a rope and swings out away from the gliders to gain moment. Then he positions himself feet-first on the return approach, waits until the just the right point of his swing, and lets go!
Bobby rolls 5 6-sided dice: 2 5 1 4 4 | 16 + 4 = 20
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "you can engage up to 2 foes at once, I think (squads counting as 1 each)"
[system] * Scheduled database dump beginning now (Sat Feb 2 16:33:54 2008).
[system] * Scheduled database dump completed (Sat Feb 2 16:34:09 2008).
[S7S] GM asks, "But does 'engage' mean 'apply my attack to multiple groups' or 'apply my defense to multiple groups'?"
[S7S] GM says, "(heck, I'm going to declare the latter in the interest of speed)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "you have to make a separate attack against each"
Bobby comes in heel-to-kidney on the pilot of the nearest glider, who grabs his sides -- letting go of the bar, and tumbling to his doom. Bobby grabs where the pilot was holding -- except backwards, since he was facing the opposite direction -- and sends it careering half out of control, knocking a second man out of the sky as well.
[S7S] Bobby says, "I have no idea, but I am keeping my narration, and you may interpret it however you wish mechanically."
[S7S] Geoffrey says, "ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "Yay"
[S7S] GM exclaims, "Rolling attack/defense!"
[S7S] GM asks (of Bobby), "And you roll defense too. Um, unless you allocated all of them to attack?"
[S7S] Bobby says, "I did."
[S7S] Bobby says, "And I have no regrets."
[S7S] GM says, "Ha ha"
[S7S] GM says, "I guess I only get 2d6+4 to distribute."
[S7S] GM says, "Weird."
[S7S] GM says, "But anyway."
GM rolls 1 6-sided die: 1 | 1 + 4 = 5
GM rolls 1 6-sided die: 3 | 3 + 4 = 7
[S7S] Garrick asks, "wait, you divide the dice, but get the +whatever on both?"
[S7S] Federic says, "(do we have an estimate on when we're wrapping this up? I'm not pressed for time but I kind of need to plan a couple of things)"
[S7S] Geoffrey says (to Garrick), "yeah"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Is that the defense of the guys I just kicked?"
[S7S] Garrick says, "oh"
[S7S] Garrick says, "then I screwed up. oh well"
[S7S] Bobby asks, "Or of the next round?"
[S7S] GM says, "They manage to give you one rank of damage (your defense is 0+4), but take 13 themselves, which spills over to the second glider and you take tha
