DM says, "well, like she explained, it belonged to this noble family that disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and she's some distant branch of the family, and her dad's dying wish was for her to try to resurrect the family"

DM says, "the locals all avoid the place due to sheep disappearing from nearby farms and strange lights and noises, but you guys are made of sterner stuff"
DM says, "so! here we are in the first room of the manor"

DM says, "you can see stone walls, wood dirty from smoke"

Tharl says, "You may want to consider the second of those before you accidentally try out the former."
Mika says, "Well, they were trying to run."

[Crows-Nest] Tharl says, "Assuming we don't go back around that corner."
DM says, "as they try to run away, Mika grabs one and extracts directions to the goblin's treasure-pile from it before letting it go"
Tharl says, "We can look in these crates, as well."
DM says, "which turns out to be that thing with the barrels and stuff at the bottom"
Tharl loads up on treasure.
DM says, "the crates have trading goods of various sorts -- mostly it's rusty iron ingots and rotting cloth, but there's definitely some salvagable things"
DM says, "and, better yet, the treasure pile at the bottom has the barbarian guy's treasure"
Tharl says, "Ah, clever goblin, not keeping his treasure on his corpse where it might attract looters."
DM says, "which is actual gold, some goblets, a signet ring, some furs, and, indeed, an antique necklace with the sigil of the family on it"
Tharl says, "Not that it actually helped him."
Tharl fills the goblets with wine from the dropped winesack back in the guardroom.

[D&D] DM says, "I guess the actual way you do it is, you pick the desired encounter level (which takes player level into account but only via DM's discretion for picking encounter level), look up the standard monster cost on the chart, and then multiply that by the number of characters in the party"
[D&D] Tharl says, "This kind of XP system seems like it'd be worthwhile for people who don't like bothering to keep track of XP to bother to keep track of it."
[D&D] DM says, "so apparently the standard level 10 monster costs 500xp, so a party of 5 would have a budget of 2500"
