You say, "Log on"
Zedekiah has arrived.
Zedekiah says, "I'm still convinced there's been a murder/suicide at Hiram's place"
LucasDodgson says, "I'm hoping that Obadiah and his brother are connected to all this somehow"
Zedekiah says, "dangit, I don't recall offhand which one Obadiah was"
Zedekiah says, "not the steward nor the guy arguing with him..."
Theophilus says, "he's the miller"
Theophilus says, "the only one who isn't having troublr"
Zedekiah goes off to read the recap
Theophilus says, "trouble"
Zedekiah says, "right"
LucasDodgson says, "we haven't met him yet"
LucasDodgson says, "although the steward offered to put us up at his place"
Zedekiah says, "well, if he's blessed by the King of Life, he must be a righteous man"
Zedekiah says, "the town would do well to emulate him"
Zedekiah says, "hm, wheere is the recap? I don't see a recent post on the #rpg bb that mentions it"
LucasDodgson says, "if he's profiting by his righteousness and not by his sin"
LucasDodgson says, "http://strackenz.spod-central.org/~lpsmith/rpg/transcripts/shorts/sargedogs.full.html"
Zedekiah says, "if he were profiting by his sin he would have been struck down"
Theophilus says, "perhaps he is being aided by demons"
Theophilus says (to Zedekiah), "Maybe we're here to strike him down"
Zedekiah says, "dear king of life, I would very much like to shoot someone and get to use my 7d6 will. I would also like a pony. I have been very very very good. love, zedekiah."
LucasDodgson says, "when the three of us start fighting over how to deal with the townspeople once we know what's up, you'll be able to pull that will in"
(From Zedekiah) Vietnam_Zedekiah says, "I say we do the entire fucking town!"
GM has arrived.
GM says, "Good evening, dogs"
LucasDodgson says, "awright"
Theophilus says, "hey"
[rpg] GM says, "I apologize for my delay"
Zedekiah flip flip flip through the book of life to find a verse that condemns a late GM
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "not that late"
[rpg] GM says, "it's all eli's fault"
[rpg] GM says, "okay, right. as I recall, everyone was in Blackwood"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "so we were"
Zedekiah asks, "Were we headed to Jude's or Obadiah's?"
[rpg] GM says, "Lucas and Theophilus had talked to the Steward, and Zedekiah to his cousin"
LucasDodgson says, "Theo and I came back from Jude's"
Theophilus says, "Lucas and I just came back from Jude's"
LucasDodgson says, "while you were making your cousin cry"
Zedekiah says, "I think you two just came back from Jude's"
Theophilus says, "everything thar is just hunky-dory."
Zedekiah says, "cry? save her soul, you mean"
LucasDodgson says, "I guess we ride back to Hiram's to find Zedekiah and compare notes"
Theophilus says, "Sounds good."
GM says, "All righty, then. Lucas and Theophilus get back to Brother Hiram's about the time Zedekiah is back from the fields."
Theophilus says, "And then it's time to go camp out with Brother Obadiah"
Zedekiah waves to the two.
LucasDodgson asks, "did you talk things out with your cousin?"
Zedekiah says, "I set her on the straight and narrow, yes."
Zedekiah says, "She was very ... willful."
LucasDodgson says, "I am not sure Steward Atkinson has been a true leader for Hiram's family, but it does not appear that the root sin is his"
LucasDodgson says, "he was doing what he thought best in a harsh situation"
Zedekiah asks, "Oh? Someone more sinful is about?"
LucasDodgson says, "I can't say, yet"
Theophilus says, "We need to find that out, but it seems likely."
Zedekiah says, "Like a moth to the flame, we Dogs are drawn to sinners, but .. well, we don't burn up like moths do."
Theophilus says, "We still haven't found the start of this town's troubles."
LucasDodgson says, "but the town is ailing, Hiram's household worst of all"
Zedekiah says, "Obadiah's not ailing."
LucasDodgson says, "yes, Obadiah"
LucasDodgson says, "and his brother is doing fine also, the Steward said"
Theophilus says, "Everyone mentions Obadiah."
Theophilus asks, "Why is that?"
Zedekiah says, "The sin of envy."
Zedekiah says, "They are jealous of someone whom the King has blessed."
LucasDodgson says, "perhaps"
LucasDodgson says, "they seem more admiring than envious"
Zedekiah says, "Ah, taking pride in the accomplishments of someone in their community? Tsk."
LucasDodgson says, "well, the Steward suggested that perhaps Brother Obadiah would be able to put us up for the night"
LucasDodgson says, "so no doubt we will be able to meet the man and decide for ourselves"
Zedekiah asks, "Shall we?"
GM asks, "To Obadiah's, then?"
LucasDodgson says, "yeah"
Theophilus says, "Sure, I could use a bite of grub and a place to rest my haid."
GM says, "Finding his mill isn't hard."
GM says, "Assuming there's only the one mill in the town"
LucasDodgson says, "presumably this is his house too"
LucasDodgson finds a front door and knocks.
GM says, "there is a little house-like structure attached to the mill"
Theophilus says, "Wall, let's tie up the horeses and knock."
Zedekiah. o O (What, no ajar kitchen window on the east side of the house?)
GM says, "A ruddy man opens the doors. He sees your coats and nods. "The Steward mentioned you'd come by. I'm Brother Obadiah.""
Theophilus says, "Thank ye for your hospitality, brother."
Zedekiah says, "The blessings of the King upon you, brother."
Theophilus says, "It sure warms my heart to find someone in this poor, ravaged town with the generosity to take us in."
LucasDodgson says, "greetings, Brother -- a fine mill you have"
GM says, "He beams. 'Thank you. Please, come in. I'm finishing up for the day. I'm glad that you'll be staying with me.'"
GM says, "'I only wish times were better around here.'"
Zedekiah says, "I'm sure your charitable contributions know no bounds."
Zedekiah heads inside.
LucasDodgson follows Zed.
GM says, "There's the smell of flour every where, empty sacks, filled sacks."
Theophilus says, "Hmm, looks like you're doin' a lot of business."
Theophilus asks, "Keeping the mill pretty busy?"
GM says, "Someone who looks like Obadiah, only thinner, is standing by the mill stone."
GM says, "Obadiah says, 'Ayes, I get by.'"
Theophilus asks, "Hmm, where's it all from?"
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "My, uh, uncle ran a mill and I helped out - can this town grow enough grain for this mill?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "darn you, theo"
Theophilus asks, "If all the farms are so hard-hit, who has this much wheat to be ground?"
GM says, "'This is my brother, Ezias. Ezias, these are...uh, I'm sorry, I never heard your names.'"
Zedekiah says, "Brother Zedekiah."
LucasDodgson says, "Brother Lucas"
Theophilus says, "Brother Theophilus, but you kin call me Theo."
LucasDodgson says, "glad to meet you, Brother Ezias"
GM says, "Ezias ducks his head"
LucasDodgson asks, "does Ezias seem glad to meet us?"
GM says, "He seems a little over-awed at you, perhaps."
Zedekiah says, "Come now, Ezias, we're just men like you."
Zedekiah says, "We eat, we sleep, we pray like anybody else."
GM says, "Ezias smiles, just a bit."
Zedekiah says, "Of course, we don't sin like anybody else, but that's why we're here..."
[Crows-Nest] (from Theophilus) Zed says, "I put on my halo all at once, just like everyone else."
GM says, "'Ezias has a farm near here. He's had a good harvest this year, and that's helped me out.'"
Theophilus asks (of Ezias), "Interestin'. You must be a pretty good farmer. Got a good well, I suppose?"
[Crows-Nest] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
GM says, "Ezias nods again."
GM says, "Obadiah is shaking his head. 'If things don't turn around for Blackwood, though, I don't know how much longer the mill will keep going.'"
Theophilus asks, "When would you say things started goin' wrong?"
Zedekiah says, "I'm sure the King will provide. 'For I hold you in the balm of my hand,' it is written."
GM says, "Ezias nods in agreement with Zedekiah."
[Crows-Nest] Zedekiah exclaims, "ha! he fell for it! he's not of the faith!"
GM says (to Theophilus), "Obadiah looks thoughtful. 'I reckon it's been a number of months now.'"
[Crows-Nest] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
Theophilus asks, "Anythin' in particular you recall about when it started?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "afk a sec"
GM says, "'It's hard to say. It wasn't like one day everything was good and then, bam, everything was bad. People's fields started dryin' up slowly, wheat stopped coming in as much, and here we are.'"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "back again"
[rpg] GM says, "that was quick"
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "what time of year is it now?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "yeah, Alim went in the sling easier than expected"
[rpg] GM says, "woo"
LucasDodgson yawns, then hastily covers his mouth.
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "it's summer? fall? spring?"
GM says, "'I apologize, Brothers. Please, come with me. My wife Temperance has supper waiting.'"
LucasDodgson says, "you're kind, Brother -- it's been a long day of riding for us"
Theophilus says, "SOme hot grub'll go real nice, brother."
GM says, "'Ezias, I'll see you tomorrow.'"
Zedekiah nods at Ezias.
GM says, "And Obadiah leads you all into his home."
GM says, "His wife looks pleased to see you. 'Brothers, welcome, welcome.'"
GM says, "You can smell fresh-baked bread from the table."
LucasDodgson bows politely to Temperance and has a seat.
GM says, "She waits for everyone to take a seat before bringing out all of dinner from the kitchen"
Theophilus nods his head, and says, "Thank ye for the kindness, sister."
Zedekiah sits as well, and nods at Temperance.
Zedekiah says, "Mighty fine home you have here, sister."
GM says, "'Thank you,' Temperance says."
GM says, "Dinner is, as you might expect, a lot of bread. There is some game and a selection of vegetables."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "okay, I'm running out of good leading questions to ask here"
Zedekiah asks (of Lucas), "Brother, would you offer a prayer?"
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "anyone else got any good ideas?"
GM says, "Obadiah's children are well-behaved and don't seem to notice that you're dogs."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "well, we could ask about the whole 'children of the corn' thing they've got going"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "ha ha ow"
LucasDodgson says, "I'd be honored, Brother"
GM says, "Obadiah's family bows their heads."
Zedekiah bows his head but looks at Obadiah out of the corner of his eye.
LucasDodgson says, "King of Life, who watches over us and shows us the right and true, we thank you for this harvest which you have enabled us to bring to the table, and pray that the same may be extended to all those in this town and in this entire land"
GM says, "'Amen,' Obadiah rumbles."
GM exclaims, "And then, food!"
[rpg] GM asks, "how much do you want to rp out eating?"
LucasDodgson says, "I wish I knew something a little fancier to say for this dinner -- after our days on the road, it's enough to make me powerful thankful"
Theophilus says (to Lucas), "You said it well enough, brother."
GM says, "'How's your trip been so far?' Obadiah asks."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "my only real idea at this point is to check out Ezias's farm, which we can't do until tomorrow anyway"
Zedekiah says, "There, brother, no need to be so ashamed. It's not your fault that you aren't as well-educated as some."
LucasDodgson says, "been quite an education -- in the world -- being on the road"
[rpg] Theophilus says (to Z), "I'm the one who doesn't have much book-larnin'"
LucasDodgson says, "it's a pleasure to see people's faces when we've delivered their mail and named their babies"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "and don't you forget it"
GM says, "'Steward Atkinson has told some stories about when he was a Dog.'"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "although I wish Zedekiah would quit naming them all after himself"
Zedekiah asks, "Oh? What did he have to say?"
Zedekiah breaks a piece of bread in half.
GM says, "'He talked about this one time when there were demons calling down the weather--' He stops and glances at his children. 'Anyway, I'm sure he could tell it better.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I called it - demon children"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I need a pitchfork and a torch"
[rpg] GM says, "hee"
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "what, you don't have one in your saddlebags for emergencies?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "used it all up at the last town"
LucasDodgson says, "interesting he told it that way"
LucasDodgson says, "at the Temple they warned us how to look for demons, of course"
LucasDodgson says, "but they always said that we should look for the human sin behind the demon"
GM says, "Obadiah scratches his beard. 'He seems to view demons as literal forces in the world.'"
Zedekiah says, "Don't forget all manner of lesser imps and devils, too, Brother Lucas"
Theophilus says, "Oh, demons are real, but they can't bother you if you're good with the King."
Theophilus asks (of Children), "This is why you always be good and stay away from sin, y'hear?"
GM says, "The younger children nod, eyes wide."
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "you guys done talking here?"
[rpg] GM says, "you could scare the kids some more"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "yeah, I'm done"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "as much as I'd love to, I already made people cry last time"
GM says, "Eat eat eat, Temperance and the daughters clean up, Obadiah shows you to what looks like a hastily-cleaned-out grain storage room."
Zedekiah asks, "No grain at all, brother?"
GM says, "'Weren't as much to move out of the way as I'd have hoped,' Obadiah tells you. 'You three have a good evening.'"
LucasDodgson says, "a roof over our head and no rocks under the bedroll? I'm going to sleep like a log tonight"
LucasDodgson says, "thank you for all your kindness, Brother"
Theophilus says, "Just watch you don't snore like you're sawin' a log, brother."
GM says, "As you're settling in, you hear a knock on the door."
Zedekiah says, "Ha ha! Oh, humor gives off a pleasing odor to the King, brothers."
LucasDodgson asks, "just throw one of those sa-- what's that?"
LucasDodgson stands up and walks to the door, then opens it a bit.
Zedekiah opens the door. "Yes?"
GM says, "There's shuffling noises as someone goes to the front door."
[rpg] GM says, "note that you're in the back of the house. this is coming from somewhere up front."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'll take the shotgun blast to the chest, fellas, I deserve it"
Theophilus says, "Let's see what's up"
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "so the knock was on the front door?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ah, thought it was on our grain room door"
[rpg] GM says, "yeah. sorry, I meant to say front door"
Theophilus grabs his rifle and his Book and heads to the front door, quietish.
Zedekiah tags along with his gun.
LucasDodgson says, "I don't think bandits are going to knock first, Brothers"
LucasDodgson says, "I imagine it's probably just the Steward coming to make sure we're settled in"
GM says, "You meet Obadiah headed for the front door. 'Brother Theophilus.' He looks sleepy."
Zedekiah says, "Don't worry, they won't get a chance to shoot first, either, brother"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "Like they said back at the Temple: Everyone respects a Dog, but they respect a Dog with a gun more."
Zedekiah hides his gun behind his back.
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha ha"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "this is awesome"
Theophilus says, "Heard someone at the door, brother."
GM says, "And indeed, it is the Steward. 'Ah, good! Sorry I wasn't by sooner. I was at Brother Hiram's longer than I expected.'"
Theophilus says, "It's a bit late, so we thought we'd see if we're needed."
GM says, "He eyes Zedekiah."
Zedekiah walks the plank to adventure. Arr!
Zedekiah has arrived.
GM says, "'So I'm glad all three of you found your way to Obadiah's safely.'"
[rpg] GM says, "man, that must have been some eyeing"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says (to Zedekiah), "it's the steward, if you missed that in recap"
Theophilus says, "We didn't have no problems, Steward."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "got that part, I dropped when he said he was at Hiram's longer than expected."
Theophilus says, "Except'n that I seem to have forgotten to put down what I was unpackin' when you knocked."
Zedekiah says, "Oh, Theophilus, you're always packin'"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
GM says, "'Good, good. Obadiah, I'm obliged for you taking them in.'"
Theophilus says, "For, as the Book says, "Lo, and when salvation knocks upon your door, answer it at once, for it shall not tarry long.""
Zedekiah says, "He's truly blessed, Steward."
LucasDodgson says (to Steward), "our good luck you suggested this place -- Brother Obadiah's been doing us mighty fine"
GM says, "'In fact, I shouldn't tarry long. I'm needed back at Brother Hiram's.' He tips his hat. 'Good evening to you all.'"
GM says, "Obadiah kind of shifts around in an 'aw shucks' way"
Zedekiah exclaims, "Ah, Steward!"
Zedekiah says, "I do have a quick question for you before you depart."
GM says, "'Yes?'"
Zedekiah says, "How are Hiram and his family doing? He was feeling much better when we left -- hopefully, King willing, there's been no relapse of sorts."
GM says, "The Steward smiles, crinkles forming around his eyes. 'He's doing so much better, King be praised.'"
Zedekiah asks, "Praise be. And his family?"
GM says, "'Sister Althea is much changed as well. I feel there are still some things they need to talk through with me.'"
Theophilus says, "I'm sure you can help bring them back to the path of righteousness, Steward."
Zedekiah says, "Ah, that's good to hear. Keep a close eye on my cousin Althea for me, would you? I fear she may .. often be near sin."
GM says, "'I trust the King will lead us all.'"
LucasDodgson says, "Well, if you'll be excusing me, I believe He's currently leading me back to bed"
LucasDodgson heads back for the grain room and his blanket.
GM says, "Issachar smiles and heads off."
Theophilus says, "That sounds like a plan, gotta finish my unpackin'"
Zedekiah agrees and follows.
GM says, "Obadiah yawns and heads back to bed as well."
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "okay, so what's the plan? go see Ezwhatever's field and hope it gives us clues?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "that's my plan, yeah"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I was hoping to find some nice juicy sin here but so far, nothing"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "Ezias"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "and there's a lot of sin here"
[rpg] GM says, "then let's skip over the mornin' and the eatin' and go find Ezias in the fields"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "you could see the lust in Temperance's eyes"
[rpg] GM says, "maybe Zedekiah will make him cry"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "we should go sneak into their bedroom and catch them at it... or that"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha oy"
LucasDodgson says, "nice fields Brother Ezias has here"
[rpg] Zedekiah is a flagellant
Zedekiah says, "Look at this bounty."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "what you do on your own time is between you and the King of Life, buddy"
GM says, "And indeed, there is a *lot* of wheat in his field"
Theophilus says, "My goodness."
LucasDodgson scratches his head.
Theophilus asks, "Maybe he's usin' some of that there fer-till-izer from Back East?"
LucasDodgson asks, "can he really be growing that much more than anyone else around here?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha ha"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "don't suggest he's got a hoe, or Zedekiah will get all riled up"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "rawr"
Theophilus looks for a well or a creek or some source of water.
GM says, "A crick runs through it."
Theophilus goes to look in the crick.
GM says, "The surrounding fields look good as well, though not quite as good as Ezias's"
Theophilus says, "Hmm, how deep you think that is, Brother Lucas? Can't be very wide."
LucasDodgson scratches his chin and leans over to look at the water.
LucasDodgson says, "nice little stream"
GM says, "Ezias must have seen you riding up, because he's making his way towards you."
Zedekiah waves at Ezias.
LucasDodgson says, "well, howdy, Brother"
Zedekiah exclaims, "I don't see what you two are so worried about, this man clearly has been blessed - well, hello, brother!"
GM says, "'...hi'"
GM says, "'y'all doin okay?'"
LucasDodgson says, "doing well, Brother, thank you"
Theophilus says, "We're doin' fine, just like you."
Zedekiah says, "Not quite as good as you, but almost as fine as you, brother."
LucasDodgson says, "we were just thinking, well, if you could spare us a little of your morning, maybe you could show us around your farm a bit"
GM says, "'Sure!'"
LucasDodgson says, "seems like you're the farmer who's doing best in town, and we thought we might learn a little to help out the others"
GM says, "'Well, this is my crick. I mean, it's the King's crick, he lets me use it.'"
GM says, "'But it makes it easier to water my fields.'"
Theophilus asks, "Heh. Where's it start from?"
Zedekiah asks, "Where's it end up, too?"
GM says, "'It's from the river a ways away. Comes from the mountain."
[rpg] Zedekiah exclaims, "it runs into town, and he's dumping chemical byproducts!"
Theophilus says, "It go through anyone else's farm? That's a lot of land for just you."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "ha ha"
GM says, "'It peters out a couplea farms over.'"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "Ezias's Medical Waste and Pork Sausage Distillery"
GM says, "He points out some other farms, and they're the ones that're doing okay. 'Runs through them.'"
Theophilus asks, "Peters out? It doesn't actually reach the river?"
Zedekiah says, "Mind if I wet my whistle? I've got a powerful thirst."
GM says (to Theophilus), "'It dries up, yeah. Sinkhole, I think.'"
GM says (to Zedekiah), "'Uh? Yeah, sure.'"
Theophilus asks, "Huh. Always done that?"
GM says, "Ezias nods."
GM says, "'I don't know why the King's blessin' me so much. I guess it's because of Obadiah? Maybe his righteousness is rubbing off on me?'"
Zedekiah takes a closer look at the crick and cups a little water in his hands, then splashes it over his face.
Theophilus says, "How far away is this sinkhole? I've always been powerful fascinated by such things, maybe I'll go take a look."
GM says, "He scuffs a foot. 'I was always the troublemaker.'"
Zedekiah's ears perk up. "Troublemaker, you say?"
GM says (to Theophilus), "'Not too far from here. Won't take you long on your horses.'"
GM says, "'Not any more. But I was rowdy as a kid? Obadiah had to pull me out of trouble all the time.'"
GM says, "'I know he's been a lot of help for Brother Hiram, what with him being sick?'"
GM says, "'I've always thought he'd make a fine Steward some day.'"
Zedekiah says, "Sin and trouble oft go hand in hand, for as the good book says, 'Shem begat Arphaxad, and Arphaxad began Booz of Rachab.'"
[rpg] GM says, "you totally just madae that up.'"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha ha"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "at least mine was believable"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "hey, I didn't make up those names"
GM says, "Ezias nods confusedly."
LucasDodgson says, "well, lookin' out for others in the town and doin' what's right are powerful qualifications for being the Steward"
GM says, "'The way things've been going lately, I don't think I'm the only one thinkin' that.'"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hrm"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'm at a loss too"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "okay, then I'm looking at the sinkhole"
Theophilus says, "I'll be back in a little while, brothers, I want to see this sinkhole."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I guess nobody at Hiram's actually said Obadiah's been out there"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "but if he's not really helping them out, I'm not sure what he'd be doing"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "maybe he's sleeping with one of the wives"
GM says, "'Especially since Steward's not been...well, never mind.'"
GM says, "'Over here is where I keep my plow?'"
LucasDodgson asks, "not been doing much for Hiram?"
GM says, "'Oh, well, his farm's not been doing so well. And Hiram's been sick for a long time.'"
Zedekiah says, "Word is he's been on the mend, though."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I can see why this guy got into trouble as a kid -- people kept punching him when he ended statements in question marks"
GM says, "'Really? That's good, then.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ha"
GM says, "'You should talk to Sister Susanna. She knows what the Steward hasn't been doing.'"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I guess that is a Clue"
LucasDodgson says, "Sister Susanna? I'm surprised she didn't mention a thing t'other day"
LucasDodgson says, "but I suppose it's often about askin' the right questions"
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "which one was she?"
[rpg] GM exclaims, "your sister!"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "oh right"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "doop de doop"
[rpg] GM says, "Hiram's wife #2"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "hey, I'm off at the sinkhole"
LucasDodgson says, "well, this is a right fine farm you got here"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'm busy reading what Susanna did say yesterday"
LucasDodgson says, "much obliged to you for taking the time to talk to us"
GM says, "Ezias ducks his head and smiles."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "mostly complaining that Hiram wasn't listening to her and the Steward, and how Althea's acting up"
Zedekiah nods at Ezias.
GM says, "Meanwhile, Theophilus is off to the sinkhole."
GM says, "And indeed, the crick runs through several farms and runs and then just...goes underground."
Theophilus says, "Huh."
Theophilus asks, "look recent, or old?"
LucasDodgson tips his hat, and walks back to his horse to ride out to meet Theophilus.
GM says, "Looks old."
LucasDodgson says, "(when he's done at the sinkhole)"
Theophilus tries to see how deep it is. Maybe we could fill it in? Or just dig a well around here?
GM says, "You know, now that you look around, you can see an old depression running away from the crick to the south that got silted up."
Theophilus says, "Hmm, maybe if we got some people we could dig that out a bit."
Theophilus says, "Might be worth tryin, get people some water."
Theophilus says, "Anyway, I should get back."
Theophilus asks (of Lucas), "Hey, brother. Any news?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "sorry, meant to say I followed Lucas"
LucasDodgson says, "Brother Ezias suggested we talk to your sister again"
LucasDodgson says, "seemed to think there was something wrong with the Steward that she knew about"
Theophilus says, "Huh, what about."
LucasDodgson says, "seemed to think his brother might make a better Steward than the current one, too"
Zedekiah says, "Can't see why that wouldn't be a good idea, for what it's worth."
Theophilus says, "Well, that's for the King of Life to decide, not Ezias or us."
Zedekiah says, "Looks like this crick changed course some time ago."
Theophilus says (to Zedekiah), "Yeah, I was just tinkin' if we got some people with shovels, if we could change it back."
Zedekiah exclaims, "Damitall, we could dam it!"
LucasDodgson looks a little shocked at Zedekiah's language.
Zedekiah says, "...redirect the crick, Lucas. Ain't you never heard of a dam before? Dam the whole thing up."
Theophilus says, "It's already going to the underworld, brother. Damning it won't do much else."
[rpg] GM says, "blrf, lag"
GM has disconnected.
GM goes home.
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "phew, now I can take my pants off"
GM has arrived.
[rpg] Theophilus says, "okay, when he comes back, we tell him that we fixed everything and the KoL is...aw, man"
[rpg] GM says, "ha"
[rpg] GM asks, "okay, what'd I miss?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "nothing of note"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "Lucas shot Theo, basically"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "we're going to talk to my sister and we might try getting manpower to re-shift the crick"
LucasDodgson says, "right, well, perhaps we should head out to see Sister Susanna, then"
Theophilus says, "Yeah, let's"
LucasDodgson says, "and then perhaps see what the Steward has to say about the crick"
Zedekiah says, "And while we're in town, we could arrange for some men to head out here for some honest labor"
Zedekiah says, "Or that, too"
Theophilus says (to Zedekiah), "Sadly, knowing men as I do, we're going to have to provide an example if we want their best work."
[rpg] GM asks, "what's at stake is: can the KoL make a rock so big that it'll throw out your back when you pick it up?"
Zedekiah says, "Brother, when we have some free time, remind me to tell you about a recent pamphlet I read about the proletariat"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ha"
[rpg] GM asks, "so back to Hiram's?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "yup"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "yeah"
Theophilus says, "We should see how Brother Hiram is feeling today, anyway."
GM says, "The three of you ride back to Hiram's. In fact, he's outside working."
Zedekiah says, "And make sure that Althea is taking care of him."
Zedekiah says, "Brother Hiram! It's definitely a testament to the King of Life's will that you're out and about."
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "how healthy is he?"
GM says, "'Brothers!' He looks like a different person"
GM says, "He's moving a little slowly, but he's steady on his feet."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ok, so what I thought was a murder/suicide was instead Althea wearing his skin like a mask"
LucasDodgson exclaims, "good to see you're doing better, Brother!"
Theophilus says, "It's good to see you out, brother."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "aie"
GM says, "'I cannot thank you enough for what you've done for me and my family.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "you're telling me, she's my cousin"
Zedekiah says, "Only our duty to you and the King, brother."
Theophilus says, "We didn't do nothin'."
LucasDodgson says, "guess we'll be able to tell Brother Obadiah he doesn't need to come out any more"
Theophilus says, "It's all the King of Life's will."
Zedekiah says, "Anything that we did was through the grace and power of the King of Life."
GM says, "Hiram smiles. His skin is stretched thin over his skull after his illness, but it's gained a rosy glow to it that wasn't there yesterday."
GM says, "'Please, come in. Althea'll want to get you something.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "uh oh"
Zedekiah follows Hiram.
GM says, "He picks up a bucket of water he had drawn from the well and lead you in."
LucasDodgson heads in too.
GM says, "Althea is straightening up the house when you get in. She sees the three of you. 'Brothers,' she says softly."
Zedekiah nods at Althea. "A blessed day to you, cousin."
LucasDodgson eyes Zedekiah and then Althea again
GM says, "'Here,' Hiram tells Althea. 'Here's the water I went to fetch.'"
Theophilus asks, "Mornin'. Where's Susie?"
GM says, "'She'll be in shortly,' Hiram says. 'She went out with some of the kids to pick gorseberries.'"
GM says, "Althea fetches some stoneware to pour water in for the three of you."
Theophilus says (to Hiram), "We were just out lookin' at that crick that runs through Ezias' spread."
Theophilus asks, "Looks like it used to run further, but shifted course a while ago. You know when that happened?"
GM says, "Hiram nods. 'I know the one. It's kept his farm goin, that's for certain. Wouldn't mind such a crick myself.'"
GM says, "'Oh aye, we had a flash flood late last year, opened up a sinkhole and shifted the crick's course.'"
Theophilus asks, "Is that what did it?"
GM says, "'I figure so.'"
GM says, "Susanna comes in, surrounded by a cloud of children. 'Theo!' she says excitedly. 'Brothers, it's wonderful to see you again!'"
Zedekiah graciously accepts the water from Althea, watching her carefully.
[rpg] Theophilus says, "hmm, I want to take the lead questioning my sister, except I dunno what we're asking cause I wasn't there"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "oh well"
GM says, "'Thank you for all you've done,' she tells you. 'Helping Hiram, setting our family straight.' That gets a look from Althea."
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "you don't know IC or OOC?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "IC"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I think you can assume I gave you the run-down on the ride over here"
[rpg] GM says, "that sounds reasonable."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "afk a moment"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "now I gotta recheck what it was OOC"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "we don't know"
GM says, "'Here, Althea, let me help you.' She dumps the gorseberries from her apron into a bowl and fusses about you three with the water."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "he just said that the Steward wasn't doing something"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "and that she knew about what he wasn't doing"
LucasDodgson says, "why, looks like you got a good haul there"
Theophilus says (to Susie), "I neve got a chance to see around this spread. Why don't you come give me the tour and we can catch up on the family. I haven't heard much news since I left for the Temple."
LucasDodgson says, "I hope these children didn't eat too many of the ones they picked"
GM says, "One of the young boys, the one with a ring of purplish blue around his mouth, burps guiltily."
GM says (to Theophilus), "Susanna looks at Hiram, who nods. 'Yes, I'd love to,' she says."
Theophilus guides her out of the house and starts walking around a bit, chatting about Ma and Pa and Little Jo
GM says, "Susanna looks excited to hear about the news."
Theophilus asks, "You've had any news recently? Everyone in good health?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "back."
GM says, "'Cousin Matthew -- you remember him, thin as a stick, always flitting about -- last I heard he had found himself a wife and was settling down.'"
Theophilus says, "That's real good."
Theophilus asks, "It's good that no one back home is sick like Hiram was. Of course, the Steward there would probably be more help than the one here, don't you think?"
Zedekiah takes a drink of the water, comparing it to the crick.
GM says (to Zedekiah), "decent. has a slightly gritty taste."
GM says (to Theophilus), "'You noticed? I swear, Steward Atkinson. If it weren't for Brother Obadiah, I don't know what we'd have done.'"
Theophilus asks, "He was a big help?"
GM says, "Susanna nods. 'He helped around the farm, was a powerful support while Hiram was sick and Althea was trying to run things.'"
GM says, "'Brother Atkinson, well, he just wrung his hands and didn't do anything.'"
Theophilus asks, "Mmhmm. And Steward Atkinson...what did he do, exactly?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "this "I know everything already so please tell it to me" trick is harder than it looks"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "walk away, and then turn around and say "there's just one more thing, Susie""
GM says, "'Nothing.' She snorts. 'I told him about Althea, what she was doing. He would come out and talk to us, council us, pray with us, but in the end, what good was it? Hiram was still sick and Althea was stil running things.'"
[rpg] GM exclaims, "ha!"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "hee hee"
Theophilus says, "It's a tough position."
GM says, "'This whole town's been sick, and Steward Atkinson hasn't fixed things, has he? Obadiah's been the one holding us together.'"
Theophilus says, "It's good that Obadiah was here."
GM says, "'Ask anyone. The only person thinks the Steward's doing right is that Brother Jude.'"
GM says, "'You know, you could set things right. Talk to Obadiah.'"
GM says, "'He won't admit it, but he knows he should be Steward.'"
Theophilus says, "Oh, we're talkin' to everybody."
Theophilus says, "We're tryin' to figure out what the King wants for Blackwood."
Theophilus says, "Thanks for tellin' me this."
Theophilus says, "Let's go back in, I'm getting powerful thirsty."
GM says, "She smiles. 'Now that my husband is up and well, thing's'll be right. You wait and see.'"
GM says, "and back to the house you go"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I think we could make a case for replacing Obadiah as Steward, or for giving everyone in town a solid talking-to about supporting their appointed Steward"
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "anyone have a preference?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "yeah"
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "I dunno, do we want to talk to Jude again?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'm a little suspicious of Obadiah's motives with Hiram's family, but sure"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I'm not convinced Steward Atkinson has done anything besides make some tough choices"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "so, maybe a big work party to fix the crick will get everyone solily behind him again"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "that's not a bad idea"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "sounds good."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I think I want to talk to Jude first, though"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "you guys can talk to the Steward if you want, or come along"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "oh, let's not split up"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "beware of shoggoths"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "we haven't had our first conflict yet and numbers always help"
[rpg] GM asks, "what's the worst that can happen?"
LucasDodgson and the others ride out to Brother Jude's again, then.
[rpg] GM asks, "hey, where's Ezias gotten off to with Obadiah's big gun?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "heeeey juuuuude"
GM says, "You reach Jude's a bit before noon, judging from the very short shadows."
LucasDodgson knocks.
GM says, "Jude opens the door. He nods. 'Wondered when you'd be back. Come on in.'"
LucasDodgson says, "howdy, Brother, hope we're not interrupting anything"
GM says, "'Nope, not a thing. What can I do for you?'"
LucasDodgson follows Jude in.
LucasDodgson says, "well, we've been hearing a lot of different things about what the Steward's been doing for Brother Hiram, or what Brother Obadiah's been doing for Brother Hiram, and we figured you were the man who could set us straight"
GM says, "'That I can.'"
GM says, "'What've you heard?'"
LucasDodgson says, "well, some people seem to think the Steward wasn't doing enough for Brother Hiram, and I know you were worried about that yourself"
LucasDodgson says, "but other people seemed to think Brother Obadiah had the situation well in hand"
GM says, "'That Obadiah, he doesn't listen the way he should, not really. But the King's obviously blessed him.'"
LucasDodgson says, "and his brother too, from the looks of Brother Ezias's farm"
GM says, "Jude nods. 'Obadiah's helped Brother Hiram out, been *real* attentive.'"
LucasDodgson says, "that's a mighty selfless gesture on his part"
Zedekiah asks, "What's he been doing for Brother Hiram, I wonder?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hmmmm"
GM says, "'I haven't seen him do much else, but I think people saw him helping out Hiram, and how good him and Ezias are doing, and figure he's blessed.'"
GM says, "'Far as I know, he helped out around the farm, doing the most critical stuff that wasn't getting done with Hiram laid up like he was.'"
Theophilus says, "I thought Althea was workin' the farm then."
GM says, "'I know he talked stern to Althea, same as Steward Atkinson, but didn't seem to do no good there either.'"
GM says (to Theo), "'Yes, she was, but there was some stuff even she wouldn't tackle.'"
Zedekiah says, "Just my thought, Brother Theophilus. Althea was working herself and her boys to the bone to keep the place going."
Theophilus says, "Mmhmm."
LucasDodgson says, "and Sister Susanna, did Brother Obadiah help her out at all too? seems like part of the man's work is fixing things around the house"
GM says, "Jude thinks about this for a second. 'I'm not real sure.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "Neither Susanna nor Althea mentioned Obadiah yesterday"
[rpg] GM says, "was it just yesterday? It seems like a week ago."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "yeah, but then Althea mentioned him today"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "or, hrm, maybe just Susanna did"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "just Susanna"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ok, so what's our list of things to investigate now? Jude helped out Althea but not Susanna. Ezias gives a lot of grain to Obadiah, who has a beneficial crick. Atkinson's not been able to rally the people behind him."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "s/Jude/Obadiah"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "Ezias seems pretty much on the level"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "yeah, I'm not entirely sure where to go from here"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I guess I'm still pushing for a crick-clearing to get the town behind Atkinson"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "if only we had a sign from above"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "let's do that, and scratch something off the list"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "well, it may be this is it"
LucasDodgson says (to Jude), "say, Brother Ezias sounded like he was kinda wild as a kid, but I have to say, he didn't strike me as the wild type"
LucasDodgson asks, "you remember him at all from when he was younger?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "we're the King's messengers. whatever we pick is automatically right, so"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "burn the town and sell the survivors to the Spaniards it is"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "only if we say it is"
[rpg] Theophilus says (to Zed), "okay, cool"
GM says, "Jude grins. 'You should have seen him when he got into his daddy's grain -- he was miller before Brother Obadiah. Went to hide in some bags and split them open.'"
GM says, "'He wasn't bad, just rambunctious.'"
Zedekiah asks, "Boys will be boys, eh?"
GM says, "'Yep.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "how shall we organize this hole-diggin' party?"
LucasDodgson says, "and do you remember that crick of his? seems like it used to run a little different than it does now"
[rpg] GM says, "shoot people until you get volunteers"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "well, I was thinkin' that Steward Atkinson should organize it"
GM says, "'Until sometime last year or early this one, yep. Why?'"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "and we just function as foremen once he gets the workers there"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "that way it's his idea, see, and so the town will see his leadership"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "that seems right"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "so I guess I had better not tell Jude all about it now"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "heh"
[rpg] GM says, "ha"
LucasDodgson says, "just seems like a pity for it to run like it does if the rest of the farms need water"
LucasDodgson shrugs.
LucasDodgson says, "well, thank you for your time, Brother"
LucasDodgson says, "we should have known you'd know what's going on"
GM says, "'Glad I could help. You want to know anything else, you come back and talk.'"
Theophilus says, "We shore will."
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "to the Steward?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "yessir"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "sounds good"
[rpg] GM says, "fwoosh"
Theophilus badump badump badump
GM says, "You ride up to where the Steward is. He looks tired, like he didn't sleep last night. You could pack all of your provisions under his eyes."
Theophilus asks, "Howdy, Steward. Everythin' okay?"
Zedekiah says, "Up too late praying last night? Steward, you can honor the King of Life by getting your rest."
GM says, "Atkinson nods. 'Hiram needed some praying, and then I was looking for the King's guidance.'"
GM says, "'Have you been healing anyone else? I know Brother Luke's back has been bothering him.' He smiles at that."
Theophilus says, "We've just bin goin' 'round talkin' today."
Theophilus says, "Spent a while lookin' at that crick over by Brother Ezias' spread."
GM says, "'Oh?'"
Theophilus says, "Looks like it wouldn't take that much work for us to redirect it back into the old channel. Might help some of the other famrs get the kind of crops Ezias has."
Theophilus says, "We were thinkin' you could ask around for some folks to come help us, bring shovels and tools and whatnot."
GM says, "Atkinson takes off his hat and scratches his head. 'That's an interesting suggestion.' He thinks some more, then slaps his hat against his leg. 'In fact, that might be good for everyone. Take their minds off of their personal problems and focus them on helping others.'"
Theophilus says, "Nothin' brings a town together like hard work."
GM says, "'I'll start spreading the word and meet you at Ezias's soon as I can. Could you go talk to Brother Obadiah and Brother Ezias about this?'"
Theophilus says, "Sure thang."
Zedekiah says, "We'll head right over there."
GM says, "the steward takes off, more quickly than you've seen him move to this point"
LucasDodgson says, "well, he seems a mite more cheerful"
Theophilus says, "Indeed."
LucasDodgson says, "hope Ezias and Obadiah don't mind this plan"
Zedekiah says, "The crick's already through their land at that point, I don't see why they would."
LucasDodgson says, "true enough"
Theophilus says, "SHouldn't hurt Ezias any, and Obadiah'll benefit when everyone else's crops improve."
Zedekiah rides up to the mill.
Theophilus follows along.
[rpg] Theophilus says, "now I'm glad I put all those dice in Body"
GM says, "Obadiah is toiling away at the mill. He greets the three of you."
Theophilus says, "Hey, brother. The Steward is off gatherin' all the people who can to come help us redirect that crick back into it's old course."
Theophilus asks, "We said we'd come tell you and your brother. Can you come help out?"
GM says, "'You're going to try to turn that crick aside?' He shrugs. 'Seems like the King of Life has it going where he wants it.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "oo, conflict"
Theophilus says, "Well, maybe he does and maybe he doesn't. But if we can move it back it'll certainly help everyone else."
GM says, "He shrugs again. 'Suit yourself. I'd love to help out,' in one of those tones of voice, 'but I have a lot of Ezias's grain to take care of.'"
Theophilus asks, "You got any shovels we can borrow then?"
Theophilus says, "I bet you can help us out that much."
Zedekiah asks, "Obadiah, I'm surprised. Everyone in town has said how helpful you've been to them individually. Why not help them collectively?"
GM says, "'You can have my shovels, sure.'"
LucasDodgson says, "better get through Ezias's grain real quick like -- I expect once the crick's moving again, going to be a lot more people with grain for you to grind"
GM says, "'Anyone can dig, though. I'm one of the few that can do anything real useful with that grain.'"
Theophilus says, "There ain't nothin' wrong with diggin'. The King of Life don't look down on physical labor, and neither should any of his subjects."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "'from each according to his ability'... wow, he read the same pamphlet"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
GM says, "'I don't look down on it, I just think I can be of more use here.'"
Theophilus says, "That's fine. If you can tell me where those shovels are we'll be off to talk to your brother."
Zedekiah asks, "Given how much grain has been ground for Ezias, I can't see how he's in pressing need of more just this minute... but you'd know best, wouldn't you?"
GM says, "He blinks. 'Check out back. The ones Ezias isn't using should be back there.'"
Theophilus goes to get them.
Zedekiah says, "Obadiah, I just recalled something."
GM says, "'Yes?'"
Zedekiah says, "Folks have been saying how helpful you've been, especially in regards to Hiram during his difficulties."
Zedekiah asks, "Althea and Susanna certainly had it tough for a while, wouldn't you say?"
GM says, "'Had? What's happened with Hiram?'"
Zedekiah says, "He's bouncing back a bit - he did a bit of soul-searching, came to a measure of peace with the King of Life."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'm surprised word hasn't spread"
GM says, "'Oh. That's good, then.'"
[rpg] GM says, "I imagine it's spreading now as the steward gets around"
[rpg] GM says, "since he was with hiram most of the night"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "mmHMM"
GM says, "'Althea felt she had to take care of the farm, and I know that wore on her.'"
[rpg] GM says, "the fanfic writes itself"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "snrk"
Zedekiah says, "I hear you helped out with the farmwork quite a bit"
GM says, "'Susanna certainly had it tough, taking care of Hiram and the house.'"
GM says, "Obadiah nods. 'When I could, I did.'"
Zedekiah says, "I expect Althea was right grateful for the assistance."
GM says, "There's this grimace that flits across Obadiah's face. 'I did what I could.'"
Zedekiah says, "Sounds like there's something else you'd like to say, there."
Theophilus says, "Hey, found those shovels."
GM says, "'I didn't think she needed to be working like she did, and told her so. She didn't agree. After that, I helped out more with Hiram and around the house with Susanna.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "huh, I thought he didn't do anything around the house"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "duh duh duh"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I also don't have the scrollback to verify"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "Jude said he didn't, but is not a perfect witness, as I recall"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "bah, I can't think straight"
Zedekiah says, "Mighty good of you to help them out, Obadiah."
Zedekiah tips his hat.
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "you want to press him on it or should we go?"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "let's go"
GM says, "'Glad I could serve.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'd press but I words hard I speaka the english good"
Theophilus badump badump to Ezias.
Zedekiah trot trot follows.
GM says, "Ezias is still working away. He waves you over."
GM says, "'...hi.'"
Theophilus exclaims, "Brother Ezias! Good to see you again!"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "also, I'm gonna have to call it a night soon"
[rpg] GM says, "mrf, okay."
Theophilus says, "We were talkin' with the Steward a little while ago about this crick, and that sinkhole, and the old streambed."
GM says, "'Oh yeah?'"
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks (of GM), "any idea how close we are to untangling things?"
Theophilus says, "And we figured it might be possible to get some people together and redirect the crick, and then everyone'll have water again."
[rpg] GM says, "I'd say you're about there, depending on what else, if anything, you want to follow up"
Theophilus asks, "He's roundin' people up, we said we'd come tell you and your brother. Can you come help?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "after we do the big Can We Really Change The Crick's Course conflict I'm out of ideas"
GM says, "And because the King of Life likes dramatic underscoring for his Dogs' statements, the work party appears heading your way."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "so if you don't follow it up with "yay you win" I'm in trouble"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ha"
[rpg] GM says, "well, you will have healed Hiram and you will have fixed the water, so I'd say that's pretty good"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "true enough"
GM says, "'I guess I can."
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "there's still something with Obadiah and Hiram's family, but I can't put my finger on it"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I think it's just that Obadiah isn't quite as generous as everyone thinks"
Theophilus says, "All right, let's go do some good work."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I thought so too, but I think Jude would have spilled it if there was anything"
Zedekiah grabs a shovel.
Theophilus takes his shovel.
GM says, "You all gather up shovels. What's at stake is, do you shift the stream bed successfully."
[rpg] GM says, "and I cheerfully admit that I have no idea what all to roll here."
Theophilus says, "Okay, I think if we start from the old course and dig back we've got the best shot."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "yay"
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "would it be better to assume we shift it with enough effort, and make the conflict over whether this restores confidence in the Steward?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I failed Theology and Philosophy, so I have no shot at Talking the stream back, so it'll have to be Physical Not Fighting"
[rpg] GM says (to Lucas), "actually, hm"
[rpg] Theophilus says (to lucas), "that makes sense"
[rpg] GM asks, "what if we do it as 'does this give the Steward the confidence he needs to take leadership again'?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "works for me"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ok"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "okay"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "and we can always shoot the stream if necessary"
GM says, "You dig and dig. The water keeps trying to go towards the sinkhole."
[rpg] Theophilus says (to Zed), "no no, we shoot the Steward if he's not feelin' confident"
GM says, "The sun arcs overhead, headed down, shadows lengthening"
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "are you feelin' confident, punk?"
GM says, "At first there is a trickle going through the old bed, but with enough work that trickle grows"
GM exclaims, "And then: it's flowing!"
Theophilus says, "All right, almost there."
GM says, "After that it's almost anticlimactic how easily the crick is redirected."
Zedekiah says, "This town sure is fortunate to have a Steward to come up with this idea."
GM says, "The Steward waves. 'It was your coming here that made this possible.'"
[rpg] GM says, "and we're in. everybody roll"
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "starting at Talking?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson asks, "roll what? acuity + heart?"
[rpg] GM says, "yeah. acuity + heart"
GM rolls 8 6-sided dice: 1 1 1 6 6 6 3 2| 26
Theophilus rolls 6 6-sided dice: 6 6 1 1 1 1| 16
LucasDodgson rolls 8 6-sided dice: 1 4 2 1 6 1 1 5| 21
[rpg] Theophilus says, "man, I thought I'd finally get to use my Body, but noooo"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "also, eeagh"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "bad rng, bad"
Zedekiah rolls 6 6-sided dice: 3 4 2 6 2 2| 19
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I thought I'd get to use will, but Lucas had to open his big mouth"
[rpg] GM says, "hey, look, I go first."
[rpg] LucasDodgson says (to Zedekiah), "hee hee, sorry"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "you can always shoot him to cheer him up"
GM says, "'In fact, this whole thing makes me wonder the King of Life has in mind for me. It doesn't seem like it's Stewarding.' (6+6)"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, ""see, don't you feel better about your angst now that you've got a bullet hole in your arm?""
[rpg] GM says, "take *that* crisis of faith, dogs"
[rpg] GM says, "let's go theo, lucas, zed (in top two dice order)"
[rpg] Theophilus asks, "can I pull in two traits at once?"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I need them"
[rpg] GM says, "I don't see why not"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "okay, yell at me if these aren't allowed."
Theophilus says, "Look, I don't have much book larnin', but I did study to be a Dog at the Temple, and I know that the King's plans aren't always the easiest for us to follow. (6+6)"
Theophilus rolls 1 4-sided die: 4| 4
Theophilus rolls 1 6-sided die: 2| 2
[rpg] GM says, "lucas, you're up, then zed"
LucasDodgson says, "I'm going to use my "I'm a Dog, and so was my Dad" trait"
LucasDodgson rolls 2 8-sided dice: 1 8| 9
[rpg] GM says, "woo"
LucasDodgson says, "Way I see it, Steward, we don't always get a choice in what we're called to do, and it ain't like you can give up just when you get discouraged. My dad taught me that. (8+4)"
GM says, "he looks discomfited at mention of your dad"
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "I'm up?"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "yeah"
[rpg] GM says, "yep"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "I'm gonna have to rant about his weak faith"
[rpg] GM says, "I am surprised"
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "oh?"
[rpg] GM says, "not really"
[rpg] GM says, "go ahead"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "ha"
Zedekiah rolls 2 8-sided dice: 4 3| 7
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "well, I still can't match him"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "you can with three dice, I hope"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "oh, of course"
[rpg] GM says, "if you want to stay in, you'll have to use three dice"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "which isn't as good as two, but hey"
[rpg] Zedekiah asks, "but doesn't that mean fallout?"
[rpg] GM says, "you won't be able to rant about his faith, though"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "it means a small amount of fallout, yeah"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "fallout isn't terrible"
[rpg] GM says, "you'll have to take the blow -- agree with him a bit -- and there'll be a tiny amount of fallout"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "especially if we're only Talking"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "6+4+3 it'll be, then, and I'll depend on you guys to shut him down"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I guess you can still rant at him in a way that agrees he's a failure"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "er, 6+4+2"
Zedekiah says, "Now, Brother, you're right in that the King of Life has many plans for us all. Even a Steward can do other things, you're not limited to just that. (6+4+2)"
[rpg] GM says, "Theo, you're up next for a raise"
LucasDodgson glares at Zedekiah.
[rpg] GM says, "unless you want to agree he's terrible and stick Obadiah in his place"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "not yet"
[rpg] GM says, "or Jude, he knows a lot"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "I'm trying to figure if I can work in any more traits"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "it would be awesome if we win this argument and convince him and then say "enh, we changed our minds, we're sticking in Ezias""
[rpg] GM says, "yay"
[rpg] GM says (to Theo), "if you can, remember that you get to roll the dice before you make your raise"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "I guess if anyone feels like arguing for someone else they can take the Steward's side in the conflict"
Theophilus says (to Steward), "Now, I'm strong as a hoss, so this here job wasn't bad for me, but do you think the townsfolk would have come out and worked this hard for us? No, they did it for you."
Theophilus rolls 2 6-sided dice: 6 4| 10
Theophilus says, "6+4"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "sorry, I was halfway through typing it"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "also, giving you time to say "waitaminit, that's not right""
[rpg] GM says, "hee hee"
[rpg] GM says, "no, that's great"
[rpg] GM says, "I'll pull in my 'I have doubts about what I'm doing'"
GM rolls 2 6-sided dice: 2 5| 7
GM says, "'They may have come out, but it wasn't for me. It was for the office of Steward. The title brought them, not the man.' (6 + 5)"
[rpg] GM asks, "lucas?"
LucasDodgson rolls 1 6-sided die: 3| 3
LucasDodgson reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a battered copy of a Book of Life. "Remember this? It was my dad's. Last thing he gave me before he left. Said it'd show me the way. Seems like you're feeling a little lost -- maybe you should take a look at it."
LucasDodgson says, "(6+3)"
[rpg] GM says, "Trait: I can see into people's hearts."
GM rolls 2 10-sided dice: 3 3| 6
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "someone punch this guy"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha ha"
[rpg] Theophilus says, "this is the problem with getting into conflicts with old retired Dogs"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "he can see into Zedekiah's heart, and knows he wants to punch him"
GM says, "Issachar takes the book. He fingers it. 'I remember him carrying this. He'd scribble into it every time he heard the King talking to him.' (3 + 3 + 3)"
[rpg] GM says, "and since i have crappy dice, and he wouldn't go to shoving or shooting or punching, I'll fold."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "whew"
[rpg] Zedekiah unloads his gun
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "aw, poor Zed"
GM says, "'You know, I was a watchdog for a long time. Longer than many. Folks in the towns weren't always happy with what we did, but there were some who talked about us as if we'd brought sun into their darkened lives.'"
GM says, "He looks at Lucas. 'That's what you've done. All of you.'"
GM says, "'The King never gives us more than we can bear, eh?'"
LucasDodgson says, "or he sends someone along to help us carry the load"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "unfortunately I'm fading very fast, fellows"
GM says, "'True enough.'"
[rpg] Zedekiah says, "Zedekiah will have to tip his hat and read the recap in the morning"
[rpg] GM exclaims, "I'm finishing up here, so you won't miss anything. Goodnight! and thanks!"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ok, night Z -- good game"
GM says, "'You won't mind if I go clean up a bit. Will you be staying past tomorrow?'"
LucasDodgson says, "naw, I think we're just about done here"
Zedekiah goes home.
LucasDodgson says, "got more mail to deliver, you know how it goes"
GM says, "He heads out, then pauses. 'Why don't you three stay the night with me and my family?'"
LucasDodgson says, "that'd be right kind, Steward -- not sure we'll be so welcome at Brother Obadiah's tonight"
GM says, "'Really? Well, you can tell me about it tonight over dinner.'"
[rpg] GM says, "if you two are okay with it, we'll fast forward to your triumphant departure"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "fine by me"
GM says, "Dinner is fine, you four swap war stories into the night, and the next morning the Steward sees you off on your way."
GM says, "There aren't many people here to see you off -- they've got work to do."
GM says, "But the Steward thanks you, hands you a buncha mail, and trudges back home."
[rpg] Theophilus says, "cool"
GM says, "And this ends the story of Blackwood."
[rpg] Theophilus exclaims, "yay!"
[rpg] GM says, "and thanks to you guys for playing"
LucasDodgson says, "excellent"
[rpg] LucasDodgson exclaims, "thank you for running!"
[rpg] GM says, "I'd like to do a post-mortem with everyone, but that can wait for tomorrow"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "yeah, definitely"
[rpg] GM says, "shucks, t'weren't nothin'"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "hee hee"
[rpg] GM exclaims, "Have a great night!"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "lpsmith is going to be away for a bit, but I'll send him the transcript anyway"
[rpg] GM says, "oh yeah, he's down in LA"
[rpg] GM says, "changing creeks down there"
[rpg] LucasDodgson says, "ha"
[rpg] GM says, "well, I'm off"
[rpg] LucasDodgson exclaims, "night!"
You say, "Log off"
